I have an interview for social media strategist with a rising DTC startup in NYC. I’m feeling imposter syndrome, since I’ve never marketed such a big, hip company. What makes you a good fit for this role? That’s what they would want to hear. Passion, experience, opinions. Books and theory are already antiquated in social by the time they’re published. Things change every 6 months. Trends are a reaction to what has become mainstream. I would watch YouTube videos of social media thought leaders / interviews / panels. Eg. If the head of social at Glossier / Casper has spoken at a conference. Absorb/emulate their thinking and points of view

I built a company targeting the same niche in an adjacent industry. I’m also writing a book about how to solve the needs of their target customer (solutions for conscious nightlife). So, having opinions and passion is a definite check! That is extremely helpful advice and 100% along the lines of what I’m doing. Thank you so much.

You probably are an impostor. It's cool, you're not born knowing everything, just like literally every other human. But congrats, cuz you suckered some people into letting you run with that inexperience. If you can manage to not fuck up in a career ending way for a bit, you'll have that experience and no longer be an impostor! At this part. Cuz then you'll move up (hopefully) and do it all over again, but bigger!! This is what we call growing, and it's super normal, if not always comfortable.

Yikes.

Are courses more helpful or brushing up on recent trends? I am not a b2c marketer but i would think a point of emphasis currently would be stuff like social impact or influencers/lack of using them.
