I have an interview on Monday for a subject I just received authorization to teach (biology) but have never taught, only subbed a few times. How should I approach it? I am a social science teacher.

I would focus on activities you would do in the classroom (ie group work, rotations) and tie them to the school’s mission/focus. My school district has “5 Promises” that are articulated on the website; One is for instruction to move from direct to engaged and empowered. So, I would talk about station activities, offering choice/voice with projects, and having students lead.

You have experience teaching and you have most recent content knowledge. Done

Don't be afraid to ask for help from others, especially if there is more than one teacher on your grade level.

Always talk about how the other experience will help you do well in this environment. Teaching is my second career. So when I interviewed, I compared classroom management, lesson plans, etc. to what I did in my first career. Also, I don't know the reason you changed certification areas, but if it is true, I would bring up that you didn't HAVE to change, but that you WANTED to-and list the positive reasons why this will strengthen you as a teacher. I didn't have to change careers, but I felt led to do so. I made that very clear in my interview and I was hired! Best wishes to you!

Working as a nurse is a HUGE benefit in my book. You can bring SO much to the classroom! Focus on that experience and compare some of what you did as a nurse to how things can go in a classroom. As a nurse, you had "planned" times for what had to be done. But emergencies could come up and you had to be flexible. You have the same issues with lessons. You plan certain lessons and amounts of time. But assemblies, fire drills, excessive absences, etc. can make you have to change your plans-you have to be flexible. Also bring out how your nursing experience can help your students have a better understanding of biology-you know best how to toot your horn! Lastly, if this is a different school and/or district than where you are currently teaching, just having an extra nurse in the building in case of emergency should be a HUGE benefit for any school!

See if they have a well developed curriculum already. Also, biology tends to be vocabulary intensive - so journal/interactive notebook type work is good for covering that. The EEI curriculum available online for biodiversity is good for use in your ecology unit. Also, with more emphasis on teaching a “common course” isn’t there already a worked out curriculum? Our district went to the three course model- we’re still revamping it, but a lot of content is similar to what we used before. So, I’d suggest getting in touch with the other biology teachers before reinventing the wheel - so perhaps suggest you look forward to collaborating with your peer teachers to make a great common course.

Do you have a sciences credential for bio? is this for a district school or public charter or private? This matters in the approach.

Cool. So then you're "qualified". what I would tout is two things.... 1. Your professional experience outside of education and how you will bring those real world experiences to the students, making the content relevant. 2. Your experience as a substitute as a positive. You know how to be flexible but effective. Now being the teacher on record, you will own your classroom and embrace student achievement even more. also, because of your flexibility learned as a sub, you will be able to hit the ground running with consistency and effective strategies for student learning.

Which of the two has better scope in the future, java development or Salesforce? Any advice is appreciated.

I see some of you have multiple retirement accounts - is that necessary if I don’t know if I’ll stay here long term? What else could I do to build wealth?
