Does anyone know what the starting salary would be for a just promoted senior accountant in A&A at MNP in Alberta, Canada (specifically Red Deer)?
I have been told I will receive an offer shortly and want to have some idea of what is a fair offer is, as my options are either take it or wait for internal promotion at my current company which should have occurred already. I have written CFE and passed it but still getting my hours for the designation. MNP
I recently went through this during my first round. Here’s what I did.
(1)I gave an original number 30% higher than what I want (my target is 70% higher than my comp now). I also said the corporate word salad of “I don’t want to waste time if we aren’t aligned, I provide value like this, yada yada yada.”
(2) HR didn’t respond with an email, only a request to call about the ranges, which I absolutely recorded because I live in a one-party consent state. They called, gave the whole pitch of “but…other benefits…” I said that’s not what I’m looking for and I want ranges. Then they caved and gave me the spread for the level above and below. Did some quick math and came back with a relative midpoint of the job I’m applying for. Turns out it is right about what I am targeting.
(3) accept that midpoint and move through the interviews. I’m currently still interviewing, but if given an offer, I’ll counter the midpoint +10k because why not?
Just be honest from the start. They’ll respect the candor provided you’re polite. Also don’t overly exaggerate what you want. They will see through it. And definitely do not record any conversations without permission from the other party! It is illegal in many states to record convos without permission.
The majority of states (38/50) are one party consent states. So long as you do your due diligence, record away for your own protection
Be upfront with them about what your salary requirements are. Be confident in what you’re asking for because if you lack that they will interpret it as you’re not worth it and you’re just seeking more money. Personally I like to go through the whole interview and have that be my last question, because I like to see if they’re interested and impressed with what they see in me. That way I can feel good about the interview before I talk salary
Nothing inappropriate about being firm that you need that information to ensure it's a fit for both you and them! Transparency in the interview process is key. If they won't tell you or it feels like they're playing games, restate your expectations and let them know you are happy to continue the process if what you've told them is in line with what they can offer, otherwise, you'll have to withdraw your candidacy.

If the midpoint is off, you can say it will depend on other factors.
