I have an interview with a FAANG on Friday but yesterday my current employer was bought, if I stay another year I get a payout equaling 6 months pay. Should I cancel the interview since I am 99% sure I now don’t want to leave my current job? I don’t want to waste anyone’s time and who knows in 6 months I might want to pursue that other company again.

I think you might have already made up your mind haha but in my opinion, I say that it doesn’t hurt to interview and still get that interview experience. Worst case scenario, you get offered the job and say no. I understand you don’t want to waste anyone’s time, but who knows? You might get an amazing offer that’s better in the long run.

likesmarthelpful

This is also a great point - getting the experience. it will probably increase your confidence in general too, which always helps in your current role.

I always say you don’t have a decision to make until you have an offer. I agree with the previous poster that the interview experience would be good and you don’t know what the offer will be or if you’ll get it.

Update, I am going to the interview because I really don’t know what I don’t know. Not for practice but genuinely to pursue a possible job. Part of wanting to back out was fear, saying that in case anyone else needs to hear it. So bravely I go forth, even a first interview there feels like an accomplishment. Thank you everyone for the input; it was all thoughtful and helpful.

Thanks for keeping us all posted !

And while I am talented I am not exactly fending off offers so it would give me a better sense of my marketability- helps my self assessment to interview.

like

In my opinion, If sometime in future you see yourself wanting to join the company for which interview is scheduled, you may not want to reject the offer now because you no longer want to switch (in case all goes well). If FAANG is your dream place, then not worth wasting a shot just for the sake of interview experience. There are other ways to get interview experience lol! Apply when you really want to give it a chance. If you think you will consider the offer, then go for it. If you have decided to say no if offered, humble advice, don’t go through the interview now.

likesmarthelpful

I agree but in this case it sounded like the only reason OP decided to stay was for a payout in 1 year, but without exploring the new opportunity you don’t really know if it’s worth it to stay for that. If you discuss comp for the new role you could potentially find that you make up for whatever the payout is by moving to FAANG. Turning down an offer may be risky, but you could always withdraw after the recruiter screening if comp isn’t going to be worth it. Or you could end up going to your dream job with better comp now and not stall a year.

Just thinking if your salary is $150k you’re waiting a year for an extra $75k payout? You could potentially get a raise and RSUs with FAANG that might be worth it or beat that in 1-2 years. Even if my math is wrong, I’d still take the interview just to explore. Nothing says you have to go forward to the next round or accept an offer.

I think it's always worth taking an interview. The idea of an interview isn't to be sure you want something and vie for the offer, the idea is to get to know each other and see what opportunity there is there and what is a fit or not. You deserve to have that chance, even if you're pretty sure you don't want to leave.

“Genuinely to pursue a possible job” - awesome!! Wish you the very best!! Remind yourself how talented you are and how any organization will be lucky to have a professional like you. Go with confidence and probably a pinch of nervousness :) no fear though 🤗🤗 and appreciate letting us know! We will be rooting for you 💃🏻

I really like the phrase 'you don't know what you don't know'. You have no idea how the interview will go,if they'll make an offer, and what the offer will look like. I feel like if you don't take the interview you're going to wonder what would've happened if you did. That's why you took the time to ask this question. Doesn't mean you need to take the job if offered. It might even cement your decision to stay where you're at. But you might want to give yourself the chance to find out.

Hi guys... I thought of getting your thoughts on what I am going through with my career. I wanted to leave my job but I'm afraid I may not find a better one and that it is very hard to land a job these days due to pandemic. I'm only staying because the benefits are good. There's too much politics. I went through a series of back and forths and decisions changing everyday by the management of whether they will keep me or not. I am confused if whether I should look for a job now because their decisions change everyday. This is very unusual for me as I love what I do.

You don’t want to be a collateral damage to their decisions down the lane. If not aggressively, just open up and explore. You’d be surprised and may be find something which you like better. Toxic environment is not worth living through despite the benefits and the job itself.

“If you never try, you never know “

Good luck!! 🤗

Is there a general expectation that a Partner has an MBA?

I doubt it's required at most firms but I'm a pretty senior staff and when I speak with Partners, they seem to speak with an MBA level of business knowledge which extends past their technical skillset.

I realize that's what makes them good Partners but it makes me wonder if I realistically need to get an MBA to keep growing and hit Partner.

I received a job offer for a PM position with a base of $125K and a 10% bonus, fully remote and ok benefits. The parental leave is pretty bad, just FMLA and STD/LTD so the most I’d get is 60% of my salary for 12 weeks. I’ve cancelled most of my interviews except for one where the pay is $135K, 20% bonus, hybrid schedule, good benefits and 16 weeks fully paid parental leave. I’d like to start my family in a year or two - is it better to take the remote gig or the hybrid role with full paid leave?

I’ve always gotten the advice that when you want to switch jobs you should take interviews from places you’re not actually interested in, so you can understand your value in the market and have better negotiating power.

I’m doing that rn - took a couple interviews to gauge my skills, my market value, and see what I need to work on for interviews that I actually care about.

However, I feel really guilty about wasting their time and going all the way knowing I’ll just say no at the end. Wwyd?
