Would be careful to learn about the different types of risk, and decide which would best align with your future career goals. Having a risk area in mind will also help you in the interview process. Credit Risk: best if you want to get financial analysis skills and move into a credit business. Market and Treasury Risk: Better if you think you’d want to move into a trading role. Compliance: you’ll pretty much stay in compliance, maybe move to consulting, another risk area, or going to law school. Would also depend on what kind of compliance you get aligned to as well, for example being in a business-aligned compliance role to a trading business vs working on Dodd frank compliance across the bank. Ops Risk: operations management and consulting exits, though depending on structure there might be room to move into cyber risk. Audit: Great area to network with senior management, if you can show them you really understand their business and risks. Have seen some good exits, but takes a certain type of person.

Analyst 1 - This comment is greatly appreciated and will be put to good use. Thank you!

Standard back office function. They just need someone to help run processes. Just have a positive and I’m willing to do anything attitude.

I’m in Risk reporting/analytics more specifically in management reporting/CCAR. I love my role, a lot of collaboration with everyone around the bank and nothing is the same. I’d imagine it’s a similar role, just be wanting to learn and do things that the others don’t want to and you’ll be good.

Positives - Risk roles get high visibility with senior management and influence in how the business is run. If you can foster a productive relationship, there are opportunities to move around. Management thinking is a skill that will only help you in your career, and is very different from the producer mindset many entry level positions have. Negatives - Depending in the risk area, people have more or less respect for the work you do. Largely this is because they don’t know what you do and can view you as a barrier to business. Again, it is up to you to prove the value you bring and have a thick skin for more difficult management. You will often be in challenging conversations where things have gone wrong and emotions run high. Getting experience navigating these situations will help you grow, unpleasant as it can be. Happy to answer any other questions you might have.

Hi accountant, do you know which risk strip are you interviewing for? Eg market risk, credit risk, liquidity risk, central function, etc. The type of work is quite varied across different risk strips.

I actually need to correct my OP. The role I applied for was Risk Analyst but I’ll actually additionally be interviewing for roles under the early careers umbrella. The posting I applied to did not specify.

Used to do risk. They want people with low aspirations and a willingness to keep their head down and grind. A career in risk is more politics and quantifiable achievements like deals / pnl. So keep that in mind as you engage the interviewers

Why is it that whether you’re in agency world, or creative in any capacity, we’re expected to do more work? Longer hours, crazier hours, higher expectations for creatives than any other role.
