The integration risk isn't from mck folks intentionally discriminating against you. It's from the very real fact that there are existing relationships and ways of working / thinking at mck that will be different from what you've used to. The manager level is known to be the hardest level to successfully integrate, regardless of the firm.

That being said, what you mention on your worst case scenario is absolutely correct as well. If you were going for partner, maybe the integration piece would matter more. If it's an exit in 1-2 years anyways, the brand is a nice to have.

OP - I would recommend joining the firm as long as you are open to feedback and are prepared to learn the McK’s consulting toolkit. I speak from experience as a direct hire EM and don’t recall being treated as an outsider. Typically, you’d staffed as an associate in the first few studies (for good reason - I have seen external hire partners being staffed as Asc in their first study) and once you are ready, you will be EMing. The learning curve would be steep, but given that you are already in consulting, you should be able to ramp us quick!

like

Exactly what M6 said. All direct hires above Associate start at the team member role. This helps you learn the way we work and perhaps even be a better manager by knowing what the other side at McK is like.

Many people bad mouth firms they don't work at. I encourage you to make the best decision for yourself. Ask all the questions you need to do that.

No brainer. D at T2 means nothing

likefunny

OP gets it. If experience is like for like, MBB EM will get first look/opportunity as they are perceived as the "safer" play

Nobody cares if you’re a direct hire EM or we’re organically grown from analyst. Nobody will even know if you don’t tell them. The outsider point is complete BS

Obviously we’ve had some press challenges, but I’m not seeing it affect much

like

And how would you have enough visibility to know if it was affecting much?

Lmao sounds like a wayyy too desperate attempt at keeping you.

Come join the Firm and let’s get this bread 🥖

I’m in a similar boat with BCG…very torn as well and fearing the “outsider” treatment /
ramp up, etc…have things pretty good here. Would definitely appreciate advice

BCG2 Good to know thanks. Mind sharing more about what the hardest parts were?

McK5 currently an SM at S& and would come in at PL/EM. Likely to make D (our AP) in the next year so weighing risk / potential upside of moving.

Came in as a lateral EM generalist and love it here

like

Good for both of you!

Just do it. I don’t know what exit opps look like from your current firm, but 2 years as an EM at McK will open up a lot.

like

Made EM lateral from T2. I am top bucket because I had a focus and started adding value quickly, which helped my platform and sponsorship network. Almost all my fellow laterals who came in as generalists are struggling mightily

like

How can you tell they are struggling? Reduced PR ratings and bonuses relative to you?

You will feel the outsider feeling for 1-2 studies, after that you can and should be able to speak same language as others and can get integrated to the overall firm. But those 1-2 studies, you will have to grind and will get treated as outsider

like

I presume you are at S&?

Go

Do it. Was in a similar spot.

All those that came from M at S& - is the scope of work/responsibility that much different as a PL/EM than an S& manager? How is it different?

Not many who lateral at EM / PL level move up to the next level at McK or BCG. You will hear of many success stories but there are many more unsuccessful cases you don’t hear about.

Which T2 firm is it? S&?

@B4 why is not advancing to the next level “unsuccessful”?

B4. Generalization is leading you astray. Count how many successful (in many cases even more successful than current APs/Ps and MDPs) former MBBers you know that left 2yrs after starting or post a promotion. Your take assumes there are no other reasonable reasons to leave consulting other than "not cutting it".

Also, why is it that Mck and BCG are deviating from their former norms and making many more expections at hiring external candidates at EM/PL and up levels? #Rhetorical Times have changed. Talent needs And what is required to be successful at the individual and firm level continues to evolve. You also have so many attractive non MBB options (MBAs atleast) out of school these days, further restricting demand for these roles, albeit demand is still healthy.

My take: MBB realizes that the products and services to grow revenue and profits will require a different operating model than their past model and are adjusting the model according. They are using built up brand preception to win over talent that will help balance/enhance the people element of this new operating model. They are making many T2s, B4, industry experts, etc MBB dreams become a reality without them recognizing that it is a different (not worse, just different) MBB, and in some cases they might not be better off at MBB.

OP, if you're focused on a stronger brand, then you can't go wrong with Mck in the consulting space, even with your current firm's attempt at highlighting current media blacklash. If you're looking at going for partner, consider time to partner, exceptation at partner, sustainability of those exceptions relative to your life/lifestyle, etc. You could also do both, go to Mck for a while, hate it? Go back to your T2/3, love it? Stay the course.

Wishing you the best, not easy to forgo a new shinny object, especially if it was a goal that felt unattainable and now is.

Hi! I rent a 1 bed 1 bath unit in a huge downtown apt complex. My apt recently got flooded & the property management arranged temp accommodations while maintenance fixed the flooding. This is the 2nd time in the past two months where I’ve gone through this due to plumbing issues. Resolutions have gone over 10 days in total. This has created a lot of stress for me. The management is ready to discuss remediation. I don’t want to ask something that’s not right, so what would be a fair ask?
