Speaking from the perspective of the hiring manager:
1. You’ve agreed to the offer in good faith and they are expecting you to sign. You can absolutely go back and negotiate, but that would a major red flag to me that you can’t be taken at your word or are flaky/inconsistent.
2. As you say - the level is lower and you’re at the higher end of the range. That you were earning more before is not your future employer’s problem. And you knew the range going into the interview process.
3. You don’t want to be at the top of the range. If headcount cuts come, you’re the new person earning the most - you’ll be the first to go.
Depending on how badly you need the job, I would either turn it down as not being the right fit or accept it and focus on kicking buns and taking names and making sure you’re having a career growth conversation once you have made progress during that first 6-12 months (hopefully you brought up the subject of career growth during the interview process and they know you’re ambitious).
Something similar happened to me when I was going to hire someone.
Note the important phrase.... "going to hire".
They interviewed well, everything was good. We offered them the job and money. They happily verbally accepted on Friday, to sign with HR on Monday.
Monday comes around and they called me asking for more money after their "internet research"... FYI, the job was a step up AND more already a good bit money than they were originally asking.
Nope, withdrew the offer and hired someone else.
You shouldn’t have verbally agreed. It’s a matter of what they will think if you waiver.
I am a hiring manager and if you agreed verbally and then pulled back, I’d consider rescinding your offer…
Negotiating after you accept an offer is only really a good idea if you receive a competing offer. That happened to me in my last role. I had accepted, but another company came through with a higher offer and I went back to them. They increased to a better offer.
You made a commitment, see through it or break it. don’t negotiate it - it won’t go well
