I have an opportunity for a promotion. I would be leading the architecture and strategy for moving workloads off the mainframe into on-prem kubernetes. Am I crazy to be considering mainframe/on-prem when public cloud is in such high demand?

No. The reality is that a very small percentage of all workloads are currently running in public cloud environments. Cloud's getting a lot of attention, sure, but lots of places will continue to need skilled, on prem personnel for a long time. (And I'm saying this as someone who is heavily personally invested in learning multi-cloud, with 7 years of experience architecting in the public cloud domain).

Plus, kubernetes is a cloud-enabling (and super hot right now) tech, so your role working with it will make you marketable.

If it's a role you're interested in, take it.

What’s the ecosystem for the on prem? Your already working with kubernetes and Docker I assume. AWS/Azure still have a wide variety of on prem services. I would take it, sounds like an awesome opportunity.

like

Ya so your still well positioned to do work with cloud stuff in the future it seems like.

How did you become a enterprise architect?

I don't think so. There's a place for public cloud workloads but there will probably always be a place for on-prem workloads as well.

I work for a company with a pretty generous PTO policy and a mostly remote flex policy (4 days a month in office if within 75 miles of the building). One thing I’m wondering if there is a way to help us I get the “I’m taking a mental health day” call out regularly which causes a strain on the rest of the team because we were unable to prepare like we would with pre-planned PTO. Any ideas of things I can do as a manager to encourage pre-planned PTO instead of these call outs?

Any recs for getting into life science or tech presales from a biotech background?

3 YOE, BS in ChemE, experience is split between supply chain and process development responsibilities. I don’t have any direct sales experience but interact on a daily basis with engineers, scientists, and project managers. Presales roles look interesting to me due to the variety of clients and product solutions. Any advice?

Considering a move to NTT Data in a healthcare consulting role. Mixed reviews in the bowls. Major concerns are bench policy, staff aug roles, 2 week PTO, and high turnover due to job dissatisfaction. Recruiter and mgr had great things to say around growth and opportunity, which doesn’t align with feedback from the bowls or Glassdoor.
Understanding things have changed there in the last few months, I need un-biased advice from fellow fish who have recently joined or can speak to recent changes

Are you pro sharing your salary with others or keeping it quiet? If you were on a group call with 3 other women employees sharing their salaries, same YOE and same role, would you feel pressured to share yours? I did not feel comfortable as I make significantly more but want them to know.

Been searching for a job since March. Have had plenty of interviews and offers. Nothing has been worth it. But I am really unhappy at my job. It’s a drag and I don’t enjoy a moment of it. It’s hurting my practice. I wish I could just quit and wait for the right job, but I can’t do that with a family to support. Anyone in the same situation? Advice?

Are other city’s getting a new “coding bootcamp” or fortune 500 company partnering with existing local boot camp like once a week?

In the last 8 months Detroit has had:
* Apple open up a developer academy
* Ford + Google partner up to make a coding bootcamp for high schoolers
* Accenture opening up coding classes for high schoolers
* Amazon partnering with an existing bootcamp — grand circus— and fully funding it for qualified individuals

Wtf? Detroit usually is the city company’s avoid?
