I have an opportunity to relocate to a different office/city within my law firm. What should I be asking and considering?

Cost of living. Intangibles about each city like close to friends/family, do you like the weather, social scene, etc. Commute. State income tax and housing costs. Work-wise, will you have a better client base? Access to better work, more visible leadership? Culture at offices can be very different even within firms. Who will you be working with and what are they like?

Sorry for the stream of consciousness list. Just some considerations to get you started.

I really appreciate it!

Happy to help. I've thought about changing cities in our office but stay in Dallas bc it's close to family. But moves are exciting!

This move will put me much closer to family. But leaving a place I’ve worked for several years and people I love... it’s a tough decision. Comparable position, office size, and pay.

Is it warmer? Ocean?

If you are moving states: will you need to take a new bar and will they pay for it (plus bar prep) and your old bar fees? Will you get time off to study? Will they pay moving expenses?

I see a lot of nice apartment communities but a lot of them have terrible reviews. Any thoughts? Recommendations? I'll be in Colorado in early Sept for 2 wks so planning to go see units then.

Had only one call with my TL in first two months. Few weeks later, on workday I noticed that my TL got reassigned. Contacted him and have setup regular catch-ups. He dropped a bomb that he is leaving and I will be reporting to partner. Partner is time poor and no feedback is offered. This is my first consulting role and I feel I am not receiving enough support. Few people are helping to learn the ropes but WFH has exacerbating the problem. How do I get a TL to receive pointed feedback? PwC

When your firm requires billable hours, how are they calculated? Actual vs realized (I.e. what you put on your billing sheet vs what is billed to the client). Does your firm differentiate? Having my weekly crisis here. I feel like I’ve ruined my career by doing insurance defense at the same firm for 8 years. I’ve been aggressively job hunting for six months in this state, I previously took the bar in another state and was job hunting there for over a year. I haven’t had anything come up. The only options seem to be the miserable sweatshop ID shops everyone says to steer clear from. Thinking about a career change to selling cars so I can make more money. Really having a meltdown

So stuck. What do I do? I joined this firm a year ago (4 yrs exp total) to grow/get more court/client exposure. Then 2 more-experienced associates were hired, pandemic, & all cases are divided between the other 2. I have no defined tasks except deficiency letters or the odd pro bono case. Boss claims it's mentoring. I still need to meet bill req.

Last wk Boss said I'll do more & my work was good, but today said I can't 2nd chair bc I don't have experience. I'm doing less now than my prior firm.

My firm has a collections budget (80% of your billable rate x 1850 hours) and an hourly budget that must be met in order to be eligible for a bonus. The firm cares very little about originations and will reward someone for making their collections over someone who brings in new work. I missed my collection budget due to some odd timing with a client, but originated more than all my peers so no bonus for me. I’ve been at this same mid level firm for 9 years and it’s all I know. Is this normal??
