9 yr JMO transitioning from USMC. 2+ YOE in cybersecurity. Got an offer from PwC for SA in cyber risk and reg. 114 +10 sign bonus. Was looking for around 130-140. Thoughts on negotiating the bonus or base up closer to the original numbers I’d given them? It’s virtual position and I’ll be out of SA, TX. Thanks for any advice.

Not to be negative, but usually in these instances they have internal people in mind. That was messed up they told you you were chosen. If it was based on background check they should be honest so you know. But over 30 years, I don't see how that could affect you anymore. I think they were waiting on a friend or an acquaintance to get it together and apply and they finally did and went with them.
I had a frustrating summer of 2020, much like you’re experiencing. Fast forward to 2024 and I am on the other side of the interview table trying to find a fit for an opening on our team. In our district, the building-level does the first round of screening and interviews while the superintendent does the second round and makes the offer. Many times the person selected in round 1 does not make it through round two, leading to square 1 for the building and occasionally a re-posting. It usually has nothing to do with the possessed qualifications, experience, or skills, but rather the puzzle pieces don’t fit together in someway. Often the excellent backgrounds or personalities displayed in the interview are close, but not perfect, leading to a “we can wait and hope to do better.” We hired in 2023 and thought we got the problem solved. It didn’t work as we all had hoped. The person moved to a different position on the team (a better fit) and the job was posted again this year. After 8 interviews over almost two months, we finally found one that would work. It was a conditional hire pending certification completion and I hope he gets it done because he was the 8th interview and best fit overall. So don’t let the frustration and desperation build as I did in 2020. In retrospect I would have been miserable in the jobs I didn’t get. A bad fit leads to more misery and frustration in the long run. Hang in there!

While 30 years is a quite some time ago, it really depends on what the incident/charge is. Since it is still on your background check, it may be one of the things that schools cannot overlook since you are working with children.
In Arkansas it depends on the mishap whether one passes the background. I would request a copy of the check, or if I knew what it was I would check to see if it is a disqualifying infraction.
Regardless of what the is issue for not selecting you, the professional thing to do is to be honest as to why they didn't choose you as the candidate, "Another person was selected, or Due to certainly background criteria, we are unable to extend the offer, etc." This helps so you're not left posting questions like this, confused, and trying to figure out what went wrong. If employers will just communicate, it will help out so much as people continue their job search.

The incident 30 years ago might be the issue, depending on what it was. But I've also had the experience of working in a VERY dysfunctional district in the past. Multiple times, we (the building admin) went through the hiring process and chose a candidate to hire, only to have district admin overrule us and refuse to hire the person. Could be that's what's going on, and if so, it might be a blessing in disguise. That was a toxic work environment.
We have the opposite problem in Ohio. Finding educators is a sad scavenger hunt. Best wishes!
I would run a background check on yourself. I highly doubt any university would let someone get into a field that their background did not pass. Then the state licensing board would have caught that before now and never issued the license required for these jobs to begin with.
This sounds like a toxic situation at these schools.

Universities don’t run background checks.
I’m so glad I found this post! I worked in a district for 30 years as a paraprofessional, computer tech and a teacher (computer science) for the last 9 years. Well, the district technology coordinator job became available August of 2023, I had my first interview in September of 2023 while still working in the district. Well fast forward, I heard nothing again until May 28th (second interview). Well, the interim superintendent never sat in on the first or the second interview, he totally stayed away. Well in the second interview, the incoming superintendent interviewed me (May 28, 2024) but his job didn’t take effect until July 1, 2024. Well needless to say he interviewed 2 other candidates, took them before the board and they were both denied. He finally told the board he would keep the computer tech guy and hire a consultant for the coordinator position. Well at this present moment, I am unemployed after working for this district 30 years! 😡
I’m so sorry you’re going through this! 30 years is a long time. How were they able to let you go in the process of you applying for the new position? And if you don’t mind my asking, are you near retirement age? Just wondering if you’re getting pushed out.
I’m 55 years old, but the retirement pension is awful here in Mississippi. However, I can retire and go to Arkansas and teach. The position I applied for is a non teaching job. I worked in this position before prior to consolidation in 2014. I was moved into the classroom so the new superintendent could bring her people in. I guess I didn’t understand the system because I was so faithful to the cause, never again. Lesson Learned!
