I am in a similar boat. I am in a non technical role and trying to switch to ML & AI. I have started with learning Python and loving how its so much user friendly than C/C++ (which i studied in B Tech). Hope to break in AI scene soon :)
Get yourself trained in DS n ML first. After that you can transition into AI via Deep Learning, Natural Language Processing etc etc.
It will take you at least a year or two, to have good understanding of the same as well as good hands on over these subjects.
Provided you give 1 hour a day religiously to your step up plan.

Python is a language. It is a tool by which you will do all the DL ML and AI. All of the libraries of DL and ML are in python.
