I got an upgrade every single time with Avis except some personal travel. If I didn’t like the car I literally walked up to the window and asked which ones in the lot were available and if I could have it and it worked. Once traded a rental because it didn’t have heated seats.
Rising Star
I was an Avis renter for about 3-4 years, every week but switched to Hertz Presidents Circle. I would never get an upgrade at Avis... maybe I could fight them for a Jeep Grand Cherokee instead of a preassigned mini van. With Hertz, I get a nice car in their President’s Circle select and go section about every other time. 5-Series, Infiniti, Cadillac XTS or CTS, even an Escalade once, Tahoe’s, etc. I did Avis for so long because they would have promos with AA so I would get the miles. I have so many AA miles now it’s no longer worth it.
Fair, I also have status with National but it’s not always available. Ugh :-(
My experience with Avis has been spotty at best. While I have gotten nice upgrades to mustangs and corvettes while all I booked was a compact car, most of the times I am stuck with what they give me because they don’t have cars available. Busy or touristy airports are the worst. On the other hand Avis customer care for their preferred has been exceptional. I have made mistakes in reservation which resulted in my final bill being significantly higher and calling their CC has resolved it all the time. I once returned the car 5 hours after the expected return time and the counter billed me for an extra day. CC took care of it
I go into the app and look for other vehicles or ask at the desk. The preferred plus status doesn’t mean anything, though. It’s like a slightly above base member. Also, book at least intermediate. The low (economy/compact) stuff won’t get you bumped up.
Just ask for one.
