Just personal experience but I had a point like this a few years back and ultimately realized that I needed a hard reset before I could dig myself out. That meant changing roles and taking time away to step back and have clarity. The stress of being so underwater at work exacerbated everything else and vice versa. When I finally discussed the situation with my lead, they had long known that something was amiss. I only regretted not talking sooner. They were equally supportive of trying to work through or finding a new landing spot and I chose the latter. It takes a lot of strength to have these conversations so kudos to you for wanting to tackle what you’re going through. I hope that your lead/team is understanding and willing to talk through possible solutions and next steps. I would take some time to think through your preferred solution, think about the actions you are accountable for, and where you need help (e.g., do you need your lead to take things off your plate/reassign for a bit?). Best of luck and I think you’ll find that people are much more willing to help than you might think!

Accenture 1, thanks for sharing this experience. I’ve been drowning at work literally years, and when I take a week vacation to step back, I come back drowning worse than before. Leadership hasn’t talked to me about it directly, because I’m practically their only full time CPA left (25 people in department. 3 of 4 partners are retiring within 3 years. Of 16 employees, 10 are CPAs, but 8 of those CPAs are part-time and usually work from home.)

I don’t have any relevant advice but I hope you are able to give yourself time to self-care, get back on track, and start flourishing again soon! At the end of the day, your health is what matters the most 💕

Thank you. Completely agree! ❤️

Update: Had a great call with a colleague and shared my plan (along with some background into how this got here) and everyone feels better. Knocking lots off the to-do list today but have to leep the momentum up. 🙂

Nobody is more than 5 years older than I am. They are however German which could affect reception. That said, Germany doesn’t count sick days and mental health days are 100% sick days there. Unfortunately, I’m in the US and don’t get those benefits.

There are many reasons I’m job searching. I can bring a lot of value and this role doesn’t align well with my strengths.

Use PTO and take a break. Otherwise, others will see it as you’re not putting in your fair share while being paid the same

like

Why don’t you take PTO (or a few sick days) but actually do some work during it to make up for the “procrastinated” time when you weren’t in a good spot mentally? I would never recommend working on vacation, but in your case it might help without explaining why you were behind. You would have the chance to complete some of the work by the time you are “back.”

What kind of work?

Background and all previous roles - Marketing, digital & campaigns. New role that I’m grappling with - HR. Specifically learning and development.

Health question: Does anyone else suffer from nerve pain in their butt/hips from sitting all day? My research tells me it’s piriformis pain. It means my sit bones are irritating my butt muscle, which irritates my sciatic nerve. It can be excruciating and hurt even when I stand. I bought a fancy seat cushion for my office chair, and I have a standing desk. Nothing helps. The pain has been around for about a month. Anyone else?? What did you do?

Just need to vent: my friend refuses to bring up the topic of covid and how it will likely effect her wedding. She just had us purchase bridesmaids dresses and I can’t help but feel like it was a complete waste of a few hundred dollars. I feel bad for having these thoughts but I’m over it.
