I have been alcohol free for 2 months but I use MMJ to focus. My dr prescribed MMJ because I don’t want pharma drugs like Adderall. Is there a place for me in AA or is it all (sobriety) or nothing?

If you have a desire to stay sober from alcohol, then there is a seat for you in AA.

I guarantee that you’re not the only person in this situation; I would just be honest about it and try to find someone in the program who has longer term sobriety who also either uses MMJ or found an alternative. You might also consider other natural alternatives or techniques to maintain focus. Amazing things happen in recovery too…folks with debilitating depression or anxiety end up being calm and peaceful without meds after working the steps.

There are folks in AA who get surgeries and need to take pain meds, but they do it in a very controlled manner and use every tool in their toolbox to ensure they don’t start abusing it. Unfortunately a lot of sober alcoholics relapse on pain meds, but that doesn’t have to be the case. With MJ, I’ve heard of several stories where the MJ became the gateway back to alcohol, much like folks who try to quit narcotics (cocaine, heroin, etc.) think they can safely drink but after three drinks they’re calling their dealer.

Trust your gut, be humble, be open-minded, and don’t let anything come between you and your recovery. 🙏

Of course. And don’t beat yourself up over the past. Part of recovery is letting go and forgiving yourself, and then even further we learn to forgive those we think harmed us.

True freedom isn’t being perfect, it’s making right all the wrongs of the past so that I can live as a free man, and to change my personality so that I react different to life going forward, hopefully in a way that doesn’t create harm with my fellow humans.

It’s pretty heady, spiritual stuff, but living one day at a time, in peace, is a feeling more amazing than the best drunk or high.

At the moment, I’m struggling with work stuff too, but I know the answer is more of the recovery tools and less of me and my fragile ego. (Easy to say, harder to practice). :)

I say, take one day at a time. If you need to smoke - smoke. Quitting more than one at a time can be stressful on you and cause a relapse. Make a plan to quit smoking and slowly make that happen, if you choose. best of luck to you

In SAA things are a bit different because most people don’t want to completely abstain from sex. In that program participants are encouraged to define what sobriety means for them.
Perhaps something like that is possible?
In any scenario, using MJ to get high and to focus are different things. It will require careful watching even if allowed because you’ve already shown addictive behaviors.

EY, very true. Much like OA (Overeaters Anonymous); we all gotta eat, the key is that we’re not using a substance or behavior to try to change the way we feel.

It’s helped me tremendously in my ability to truly kick the alcohol to the curb. While I feel curious about abstaining from weed, the harmful outcomes just aren’t there in NEAR the same capacity. Alcohol truly is the devil. Stay focused and curious.

Thank you, I feel the same. Although I am getting even more disciplined with the MMJ, not taking it unless I need it to do a task. Yeah, my desire is to stop drinking first and foremost.

My current role is sales so when I “put my 2 weeks in” they’ll most likely tell me to head out now (no problem at all). When do I quit the job I’m at now? After I accept the written offer? Wait until the background check comes back?

Finally an easy AF day! I woke up with a stomach flu, can’t keep anything down, got chills and aches….no desire to drink today! Finding that silver lining. Been very nervous about quitting cold turkey. I had a stress breakdown in Feb from overwork that triggered constant chest pains, BP has been dangerously high and not yet under control. Hoping this AF day assuming no heart/BP episodes tonight will give me the confidence to have more AF days each week.

I’ve been sober a year now, and someone recently reached out to me about not drinking. When I suggested AA, he said ‘washed out people with nothing to lose’ wouldn’t comfort him. And that it was a ‘scared straight’ approach. I know his is a super harsh and ignorant opinion, but I just want to say if you hold it, it’s so far from the truth. Regardless of age, I’ve met some of the coolest unique people I’ve ever come across in aa, and I just felt sad people might hold that opinion of it in 2021

Anyone in the Denver area working a 12 step program and want to hit a meeting this week? Looking to meet more people in recovery.

After 3 years, the therapist disclosed that she’s in the program. I had wondered often about the source of her knowledge of the steps. Still I would’ve preferred her to remain anonymous in this regard. Now I keep wondering about whether I’ll see her at a meeting and what her story is. So odd. So self centered of me.
