I have been doing consumer bankruptcy for 3 years at a small firm. I want to transition to big law to do corporate bankruptcy, has anyone ever successfully transitioned without restructuring experience or am I just a lost cause?

Have you looked into clerking? It might make more sense if you clerked for a bk judge (Del, SDNY, or SD Texas) and that would help establish corporate restructuring experience.

I personally haven’t seen anyone lateral into big law rx from consumer, but that doesn’t mean it can’t happen/hasn’t happened!

Clerking is your best bet

Agree. Doesn’t matter too much which court but Delaware, Tx, NY would be helpful. I did a bk clerkship right out of law school (in NC) and went straight to a big firm.

Hey all,
I am looking for some guidance. I am currently an RN and just feel like the healthcare system is falling apart. It could be I just need to step away from direct patient care and do something more behind the scenes. Anyone else having these thoughts or have any guidance? I appreciate the help

What do you wish design students would learn in school to ease the transition into needs of business? I have seen an increasing need for more education/inclusion/overlap into other areas of business that depend on design teams so they understand what goes into the process. Does anyone else find it ridiculous that firms require a minimum daily time entry? For example, my firm requires us to bill 6 hours a day, whether or not it’s billable work, we have to have a minimum of 6.0 in our time entry system every day or we get flagged. If we’re on vacation we have to pre-bill 6.0 a day. Why the hell do firms do this???

I have this partner who doesn’t enjoy working with me because I do below avg work for her but she has little choice of foot soldiers. I do below avg work for her because she consistently gives me little time to do huge tasks (and usually at odd hours) and doesn’t involve me in what finally goes to the client (and I have no visibility on the client’s expectations, response, feedback, expected timeline). How do we (mainly I) get out of this painful cycle?

When’s the ideal time to go in house? I’m a sixth year in L&E. I really like my firm but I’m not sure I want to litigate and bill hours for 30 more years. Should I start looking in the next year or two, or wait until I have more experience?

I've only been in biglaw for a year, but have been practicing for seven years so far. I used to be a state regulator for this practice area and generally enjoy working at a private firm. A partner at a boutique firm that I'm friends with has called me every few months to check-in and see how I'm doing. During our last call he essentially offered a job after I get another year of experience in private practice. Five year track to partnership. No billable hours.

Trying to lateral and the conflicts clearance process could not be more frustrating. I'm at the point where I'm becoming resentful and annoyed at my new firm and I haven't even started. Is this indicative of my future experience there or completely unrelated?

Working fairly regularly with the AGC of an issuer client (which has been on an endless cap markets deal frenzy during Covid). He’s become strangely familiar on email, calling me bud, sailor (?), kiddo, bro, etc. It’s never felt condescending / inappropriate—he’s actually pretty great to work with. But recently he started using “love” in awk ways, like “love you for turning this doc around so quickly.” It’s almost funny, but should I maybe be telling someone like the partner on the deal?
