Hey OP, I don’t necessarily think this is cause for panic.
At high level, once people’s basic needs are met, people can be motivated by 3 things:
-material things like money or gifts
-power - things like promotions, influence, responsibilities
-social things - affinity, relationships, love
Generally it’s a combination of two or all three, but almost everyone has one strong preference.
A lot of us are attracted to this industry because of people - relationship development, comradery, etc. So I don’t think what you’re experiencing is all that unusual and I bet you there are quite a few people that are in the same boat.
That said, I think just keep an eye out on making sure it doesn’t take over you and you appropriately balance it with your personal life as well.
Praise? Doesn’t do much for me.
Would rather have 💰
Love P1s response! I completely agree that it’s only natural to find motivation in praise from others. Relationships are actually one of the few things that keeps me going at the firm!
This really resonates with me, too The tension is that our role is to be the hero behind the scenes for our clients. I’ve worked in collaboration with my clients’ agencies (media, ad) and they seek out public credit, where we tend to deflect pretty quickly. Creating an internal culture of recognition and praise has been critical for me, since I would not feel fulfilled by clients
Actually what I have seen work is recognition in a public forum like ‘All Hands Meeting'. I have seen this work for consultants (who may earn a lot more) as well as internal resources. It needs to be sincere and from the heart (one can easily recognize the fake ones). One per quarter seems like a good number. And don’t forget the bad times - especially important then
Agreed ZS1! Like any good consultant, I also don’t want/need public praise. Referring to the hallway conversations where they thank me for helping make them successful, etc. My concern is that my happiness is reliant on an external source as opposed to the work itself.
