I have been employed with my company for about 5 years on and off (I was laid off in 2020 due to Covid but was rehired in 2021). When I came back they hired me back with a demotion and decrease in pay. I am an overnight residential staff member. How much is compensation within the field amongst the majorities of non-profits (and/ or for-profits)?

While I can’t directly answer your question… There are many factors that determine your worth. You were essentially demoted. Did they get rid of this position? Are you still doing it for less money? Is there opportunity to for you to fill it again?

If your position is in demand, I think it would be a good exercise to go get another offer.

I was discussing my recent job search with some friends and we got into a small debate. I stand firm on not wasting my time applying for a job that doesn't post the salary with the job description, anyone else do this? I feel like anytime I have interviewed for a job that didn't post the salary, they end up lowballing me during the offer phase.

How far do you live from your office / where you practice? I’m a solo with a land use / zoning practice. I’ve always lived in the same city I worked. Unrelated to Covid, my city has moved all filing and permitting to online systems which means I only have to be in person about 4-6 days a month. I’m thinking about moving about 40 minutes outside the city (and potentially as much as 1.5 hrs from evening meetings). Reasonable? Way too far?

Hi all. I’m making a career shift from graphic design to project management. I’ve spent the last 3 months interning as a PM at a small (<15 people) marketing agency; reported to our account manager, worked closely with the co-owners; exceeded expectations. I received a full-time offer: head of PM, reporting to one co-owner, on equal footing with my summer supervisor; $40k base. Looking at local industry standards, average sits around $75k base. Can I reasonably negotiate and ask for $60k base?

A month ago I was given a promotion w/o a raise, and my new responsibilities were announced to the whole office. I’ve been persistent in following up to discuss salary and it’s always a song and dance about “benchmarking exercises”. The latest is that they “may” be able to offer 4-5% since it’s “a promotion but not a level change”… but no sense of timing commitment and frankly, less money than I know I’m worth. Really like the work but it’s crushing me. Any last ditch negotiation ideas?

Have an interesting be possible offer. The salary "might" be on the low end of my desire number, the health benefits won't start right away; takes 60 days then they begin on the first of the month following the 60 days. 401k contributions don't start until 6 months. PTO is only 10 days plus a number of company holidays.

Other than more base salary, are the things negotiable, like more PTO? What about also basking for compensation to cover Cobra payments during the transition phase?

When is the right time to ask for a raise in salary? Nearing the end of my first year at current tech startup.
