I have been offered 2 jobs: middle school and high school (freshman). Which would you take and why?

Thanks for the advice everyone! I decided to take the middle school position. I have taught middle school for a while now. I felt like I know the material and wouldn’t be learning new material on top of learning the school and kids. Plus, during the interview, I felt very comfortable. I am an “all about the feels” type person. In fact, when I called to tell the Principal I had accepted, I could hear the AP clapping and excited in the background. That just confirmed my decision.

That is awesome! To me, nothing feels better than someone feeling genuinely enthusiastic about my presence. I trust you will have a great year!

I have taught at middle and at high school. Take the high school job! Ninth-graders are a joy to teach. However, that being said, always do your research. Look up the reviews and demographics of the schools. If possible, tour the campus. Make your most informed decision.

One thing you might want to consider beyond the kids is what the cultures at the building are like? Is admin overbearing and micromanaging or supportive and understanding? How do the halls look and what is the first thing you see when you enter the building? These will make an already enjoyable experience even more so and if it's a challenging environment then a supportive team among school staff will help to get you through the tough times.

I've always taught 9th grade (going into my 5th year in the fall), so I will say there are pros and cons :) They are energetic, with a capital "E." They're still, at times, in middle school mode. They're not quite adults, but they kind of want to act like they are (and other times, they throw pencils in the ceiling). When they're active, it gives me energy. They're also at an age where you can connect with them on an emotional level. When they're unmotivated, it's painful to get them to speak. It's really about what you're trying to teach, and who's the best audience for it.

100% yes, in regard to students pushed through. I have students who were put in my class (upper level) because they were breezed through middle school English, then they get to me and they fail out. How? Why? Ugh :(

High school for sure. Middle schoolers are walking hormones. Ninth grade--they are a little more mature.

I moved to highschool after many years of working in middle school. It was the right decision for me. I enjoyed the kids, who they were, in middle school. High school afforded me an opportunity to really learn how to teach my content. High school also isn’t as heavily tested as middle school here in Cali. So the pressure of standardized tests and “testing season” aren’t really a factor when teaching high school. And I found that my 9th graders were very similar to my 8th graders, except you can instill a little healthy fear in them and inspire them a bit more. The higher grades in highschool are different than middle school. I really enjoyed teaching 11th grade. By the time they get to this point they have begun to realize their own agency and they’ve begun to develop their own ideas about the world. Some of my best philosophical convos were in my 11th grade classes.

Whichever one brings you the most excitement when you think about it!

Take the high school - a little more free time for you. You don't follow high school students from class to class, but you might have to follow middle school students.

Probably 9th grade. They have upper classmen modeling more mature behavior for them. They need credits for graduation so there is that external motivation. Also, I did teach 9th and now I have the older, which is nice.

Between middle and high school, I would go for high schoolers. They are mature minus the drama.
