I have been out of work for 4 months. I am 52 years old and have 20 years of customer service experience and 14 years in office management. Why, at my age, is it so hard to find a job?

I’m 31, just graduated with my bachelors in business/information systems, have 2 professional certifications, and over 10 years of management experience and have been looking for a job for 6 months. I have sent out hundreds of applications, at minimum, had one interview, and several assessments done. Still no offer.

It’s definitely not your age. It’s definitely just the job market and recruiting practices these days. I also have tons of friends that are recent grads as well with impressive resumes that can’t find jobs either.

I am about the same age and I do think there is an age bias, unfortunately. I trimmed my resume to remove some of my earlier positions and I didn’t include the year I graduated college. Basically to give me enough experience, but not too much. Also, I do everything I can to look a bit younger, so that most people don’t realize my age.

Elishah,

Allow me to share my perspective, drawn from decades of experience in Information Technology. With over 30 years under my belt, I've navigated the field with few setbacks, having come of age professionally in the heart of Silicon Valley. Beginning my journey as a young woman, I ascended to executive roles within the realm of information technology.

Age discrimination is an unfortunate reality. It's a phenomenon I've encountered for the first time in my career. Despite our wealth of experience, age often translates to higher pay and potential health risks. It's crucial to acknowledge this truth and not allow oneself to be misled or dismissed.

Furthermore, I find myself in a unique situation, having been out of work for six months. While my resume catches the attention of many prospective employers, the interview process ends with disappointment more often than not. Despite being assured of my strong candidacy throughout, I consistently receive rejection notices after making it to the final rounds. It's disheartening to come so close, like securing second place out of 600 candidates for a directorial position.

Let's discuss the value of education. While it holds significant importance, a degree alone doesn't guarantee an understanding of a company's inner workings or culture. Schooling doesn't equate to real-world experience. However, it does demonstrate an individual's ability to tackle challenging tasks accurately and punctually.

In my own business endeavors, I prioritized skills over education when hiring. The capability to deliver professionally to clients was paramount. And age was viewed as an asset – a testament to expertise, accomplishment, and depth of knowledge. I urge you to embrace your seasoned expertise confidently as you approach interviews. You are a proven expert in your field, an accomplished individual with invaluable insights to offer. Own your experience, and trust that higher forces are guiding your path. God is good! We will get through this.

Best Regards,
Angel Sudario

Also, 4 months isn’t an excessive amount of time to look for a professional level job. This was several years ago, but it took me over a year. Not to worry you, but to hopefully communicate that it isn’t just you.

It’s just a difficult job market. I was laid off 28 months ago. I’m open to relocation, happy to return to an office and I still can’t find a job. I can’t even find freelance work.

Agencies won’t even give me an interview because I don’t have enough agency experience. Wierd because now everyone who worked at the agency when I was a client is now on the brand side. I don’t know why it doesn’t go both ways. 🤷‍♀️

You WILL find another job! Don’t worry. I found a higher paying job at age 46, I found a job at age 52 and I found a MUCH better and higher paying job at age 56. It took me a bit of time to find the middle job. We were just getting out of the Recession. The other two it was one try and I was in. I have a similar background: customer service and customer service supervision (1st level only). You will do this! Keep trying.

Go on LinkedIn and select option for receiving job postings for positions you would be interested in.

Good luck.

I thought it was just me not being able to find anything . Hopefully something you get something soon

Make a list of companies and go on LinkedIn. Find people who work for that company and ask if they will give you a referral. My company will pay me to bring in new talent.

We need to openly discuss ageism here. It's not just the market. After 40 it becomes difficult and you are considered expensive. This culture values the young and cheap, not the wise and experienced. It totally sucks.

I currently work on a B2B (SaaS) product that has never ending things to be fixing and building which overall is great but the company isn’t doing that well and I feel really burnt out from being the only designer with no help. Boutique or big 4?

I'm currently an ops manager at a big 4 in London and received an offer from a small boutique firm with 25-30% pay rise.

I'm also in the process with Accenture but I feel like I'm not sure if I'd jump just for the money but also change in environment.
What type of things would you be asking yourself if you were in my shoes and debating to jump ship?

However i feel with just 2 years of experience if i take the position i might have to stay much longer in the company than i intend to as a minimum requirement for position of TL elsewhere is 4 years of experience as associate. Also what is the salary slab one should get as a TL?

Working as business System analyst( BA).
Would it be a good idea to switch role to business analytics. I have worked in software projects before but have never worked in the data project. I feel bored in business system analyst so want to move to some technical role.

I just listened to an interview of a creative director recount their path towards copywriting at a famous ad agency. It could not have been a more textbook case of failing upwards as a white man.

It would seem the only thing you need to make it as an advertising creative is to have lots of not particularly original ideas. Practically every other skill is unnecessary. If you’re a white man.

That this level of mediocrity passes for talent explains why so many agency briefs are so lame.
