I have been working in HR since 2004. I have a bachelor's degree but it is not in HR, it's in a medical/technical field. My entire career in HR has been on the job training and I have worked besides people with HR degrees doing the same things they do. What extra skills do you think your HR degree gives you that you wouldn't have without the degree?

I am working on my HR degree now, but in working in the field I’d say having a degree in HR isn’t needed if you do have a bachelors already even in another field. It could be good to study and test for a SHRM certification though if you haven’t already. You have to continuously learn and stay up to date on HR with it too which makes you a strong candidate in the workforce. I’ve seen executives pick candidates with the certification over those with degrees because their knowledge is being up kept where a degree is limited to what was studied and learned at that time and the field is always evolving so the certification makes you keep up to date with the current.

Proof to people that don’t know your story or that don’t take the time to hear it that you’ve been trained on the basics of HR from a book. And, that you are capable of learning that info and regurgitating it on a test to a professor in a classroom. Either of this things might or might not be valuable depending on your situation and goals. PHR or SHRM-CP might be a logical next step if you are interesting in pursuing a continued education with the added benefit of letters behind your name that help those that don’t know your story to understand you are serious about what you do. (Most of the time).

Not much, don’t worry about it. I have education in management. They usually teach you some simple stuff like legislation, that changes and gets outdated like every year, and basic concepts. You have already learned them on the job. Just keep up with new stuff via LinkedIn Learning or another online learning tool. Also, if you want to go to college, look into organizational psychology - that stuff is really useful

I’ve never really taken sick days in my entire consulting career, about 2 years in. I do not want to, and I just don’t get sick often. But I’m wondering if this is something that is valued by upper management when evaluating their talent? Any thoughts from leaders and managers in consulting? I’ll continue to be the same regardless but I’ve been curious is this is a strength.
