I have been working in law for 7 years as a legal Assistant I am thinking about going back to school to get my paralegal certificate because I need to make more money is it wroth it? I notice that a lot of paralegal job is only looking for experience which I do not have I mostly specializing in medical records. Is there other jobs I can apply for that specialize in medical record request ?

I wouldn’t recommend getting the paralegal certificate. You’re better off getting promoted within your firm from legal secretary to paralegal eventually. Once you have experience as a litigation paralegal, you can basically get into any firm as most firms are in need of litigation paralegals.

like

I agree with what Attorney 1 said. A lot of firms say they want the certificate, but I don’t think it’s necessary. You learn more on the job. I don’t have a certificate - I started as a file clerk and worked my way up to senior paralegal. I get the wanting more money thing - I’m in the same boat. Truthfully, job hopping is the quickest way to make more money.

like

Agreed! I job hopped my way up to partner, and almost 2x my salary in the past 6 years. I know lawyers that are still making the same because they are afraid of change and the unknown of moving. However, I know from experience that hopping is the way to go, especially in this absolutely brutal economy.

You can make a great career for yourself just specializing in medical records review. Do you have a background in nursing or medicine? Continuing that education would have a far greater impact on your marketability than a paralegal certificate.

like

No I do not have a nursing degree or medical degree
could you be more specific in regards to the career pertaining to medical review?

I was more than 15 years in to my career as a paralegal when I went back for my certificate, associates, and now bachelors after working my way up. It’s a big help, more and more places want you to have something, especially if you’re in litigation or corporate work. It will definitely land you the higher paying jobs. If you can do it, go for it.

Depends on what State you will work in. Some states require a certificate, others you can use your experience as a legal secretary at a law firm. Insurance Defense is an area that deals with a lot of medical records and also has high turnover since, It’s a lower pay rate due to insurance billing rates, so a lot of people leave after 2-3 years. It might be easier to get an entry level position with law firms that specialize in ID.

I got into the legal field with a non related Bachelors. I was told "You'll never get anywhere without further legal education". I earned my Paralegal Certificate in 2020, it didn't really make a difference!!!! I was just basically a glorified Receptionist for 3 years.

If you want to deal with medical records, then apply for personal injury or workman's comp. I always say experience is experience. unless you've been working in Estates/Trusts, your skills are transferrable.

Okay so, its been a while since I've been seeing this in Linkedin:
The Job requirement says its Entry Level, but the experience it requires is always 6 year+... like how would a fresher match that.. should I've started coding at 6th grade or what?

I understand that it's a way of "SEO" in LinkedIn but it just discourages us freshies.

Actually not sure if this post belongs in this bowl but.. it is what it is?
P.s. I still apply to these because what's the worst that could happen... right?

I am a M2 at B4 FDD and don’t know how long i’ll be genuinely interested in this work. Currently debating rotating into a B4 IB associate role for a year or two, then moving to PE. Is this a reasonable move? I know IB lifestyle will suck, but I don’t want to find myself in a spot where I dislike what I do in a few years and feel like moving to IB may increase my chances of landing a better gig in the future ( as opposed to sticking to FDD)

Successful FDD partners and senior managers - what are some habits that separated you from others as you progressed in your career?

I took my first Data Science job in a very small company and I had no idea what the job should be like because this was my first.

I ended up doing software design and other engineering tasks during years, not a lot of research or data crunching.

The good part is that I realized that what I really like is to design systems and to program. Now I want to apply for SWE jobs, but afraid that my job title will be a problem. Any tips?

After 3 months of applying I some how got an interview with a well known growing tech start up! Interviewed and got an offer this week. Unfortunately the offer is lower than my current comp with 1 yoe but it gets me out of tech consulting/compliance and into a pretty interesting product facing role! A bit sad about a lower comp but also pretty pumped about pivoting career paths so early and getting to work in product! Hope this “success” helps motivate some of y’all who might feel down!

Don't know why my entire team is frustrated at work life in PwC AC Kolkata. Is it because of any of the following?
1) The very late appraisal process in PwC AC Kolkata
2) Not much expectations from appraisal and bonus (based on experience of existing employees.)
3) Other big 4s are giving much better hikes compared to PwC.
4) Work timings and rewards are not commensurate.
5) Any other reason.
Please give your thoughts if similar is the situation in your team.

I am in the final steps of the interview process for an in-house position. I mentioned to the recruiter that I had unvested equity I would be leaving on the table. She said the company would take this into account and make me whole. She later asked for proof of the equity in the form of my account statement and balance, which I provided. I have not yet received an offer. Is it typical for companies to ask for this documentation if they don't intend to make the candidate an offer?
