I have been working in public accounting BTS team (mostly tax compliance and provision) for 2 years. Was wondering if I need to specialize in a certain area of tax, like accounting method/M&A/credits etc.? What are the promotion opportunities like in the specialized team? How are the exit options if I wanted to quit public accounting?

The best exit opps for tax from PA are compliance and provision experience. Promotions in specialized teams can be just as erratic as in any team, I.e. what is the current headcount to work ratio, how many people are at each level, what is the leverage, is any of the work only temporary or is it sustainable. Certain speciality areas like methods and credits, there aren’t really a lot of exit opportunities looking for that kind of experience so you have to stay in client service for the most part.

M&A experience would be beneficial at almost any larger industry job that does deals semi regularly. Not sure I would do it long term (more than a couple years) but getting experience there will be valuable if you want to do day Fortune 500/1000 tax dept work in the future

The best way to go is to specialize for 2-3 years and come back to bts. Then exit to industry if you want. Not many industries hire specialists. But if you must exit as a specialist, I’d go with international tax.

like

Probably limited exit opportunities with accounting methods, but plenty of promotion opportunities. It’s one of our highest growth practices, and we’ve had several people promoted to partner in the last few years, including 2 this year.

what about Tax Technology Consulting group after staying in BTS for 1-2 years?

I'm looking to find a job like the Forward Deployed Engineer role Palantir Technologies in the UK.

I have become hooked on finding a job that involves solving the kinds of problems they presented during their interviews. Although I got to the final round my performance anxiety got the better of me (I think I wanted the job a bit too much...). I will reapply after working in a similar company.

Is it "deep tech" / "data science" or "smart enterprise" that they're doing? Any advice welcome.

Anyone hiring those who have been out of work for a year? I took time off to tend to personal matters, but I am now looking to get back into the workforce again. My previous experience includes time at B4 audit up to senior level and then transitioned to manager in industry. Senior/manager roles are preferred.

I don’t mind audit. However, I’d prefer it not to be at a B4, as I am looking for some semblance of a work life balance.

DM me if you have something above, thanks.

I left public accounting for industry about 1.5 years ago. I was a senior in a PCS group. I'll be looking to get back into PA in a PCS group once I get licensed.
