There is hope. I went from private practice to state government and it was a fantastic change particularly for WLB. It's not as visible to firms and easy to forget there are thousands and thousands of lawyers doing this daily so you can be one of them! Best of luck!
Do you have ideas of what you might want to do next? I’m in the same boat and cannot imagine having to do this another 3 months let alone 30
years, but I find trying to figure out what’s next is a challenge.
Going to start looking at attorney jobs in state or fed. Explore any in house or regulatory positions. It won't be easy, but I know I cant sustain private practice for the rest of my career.
It’s great that you’ve recognized your feelings about this early- you can definitely move out of litigation. After 3 years of patent litigation I transitioned to a tech transactions practice and liked the work a lot more, and also gained more marketable/translatable skills . 3 years of that and moved to an in-house position at a FAANG company where WLB is MUCH better. It sounds like you’re still relatively early in your career- the sooner you can make your next move, the better!
This is where I’m at too. It’s honestly kind of nice to have the pressure of trying to make partner off your shoulders, right? The constant anxiety over being perfect lessens a little bit when you get to that point mentally. Or it did for me. Good luck friend!
I've been a transactional attorney for a few years but have always wondered if I would prefer litigation. This description does not make me want to switch though I don't love transactional work either.
As a litigator, it will be much more difficult to move in house or somewhere in compliance. As a transactional attorney, you will be much more marketable if firm life isn't your forever home.
Pro
Look into in house privacy jobs. Lotsa hiring. Growing field. Recommend.
In-house is the way to go. I am just like you - litigation is not for me and I honestly can’t stand it. Have been so much happier in house.
I'm the other way, as I would avoid government. I started in government and the pay was not worth it. You'll still end up working 60 hour weeks if needed and you'll still deal with the same issues, discovery, emails, etc, because the government doesn't ever concede a thing
Usually it's more acceptable to ask about the hours when interviewing for government and people will be more up front about their answers.
Litigation associate who also hates litigation and private practice in general.
