I have found myself stuck professionally. I pretty much embody the “digital” mantra of the firm, even before it was cool. I have developed and brought in new tech to massive direct $ benefit. My feedback is all amazing but at the end of the day my leadership doesn’t really understand what I do. I am having managers that fill more traditional manager roles passing me by even though they don’t contribute close to the same $ and certainly don’t develop any new offerings like I do. What do I do?

Go to a digital firm? Big4 does not understand digital TBH.

OP to be honest based on what you’ve written it seems that you’re filling more of a specialist role or tech SME versus a manager role. Nothing wrong with that but if you were at Deloitte, I’d tell you that you were in the wrong career model. If you aren’t managing teams and client relationships as a primary part of your job, you’re not fulfilling the expectations for a manager and therefore that’s why people are passing you despite your great work.

Because of that, I’d make sure to get into a career path/model that rewards your technical skillset and contributions - at Deloitte that would be specialist - because you would absolutely move up in that model based on what you’ve written here.

You need to look at the expectations for your model and confirm you are exceeding them - and if you aren’t, maybe you’re not in the right model.

If other folks are using the tools / IP that you have developed to deliver on client engagements, you can do the same.
Your partner / practice head seems content with what you have already built and doesn’t value updating and improving. That is a clear indication for you to pivot back to client facing but try getting staffed on projects related to your niche skill set.
Either that or find a non-consulting product role.

If you can carve out the time, look for other opportunities. Some firms say they are "entrepreneurial" but in practice they are very risk adverse and won't jump in until something is proven

Your passion for what you do is making it easier for them to shunt you off to the side.

As an interesting side note I can’t get any additional resources to help me. Since I’ve developed nearly everything that my practice uses for most client engagements if I were to leave it would all implode within a year without updates. And I am hampered in high value new product development because I can’t get any help. I’ve have said all of this and written business plans but the lead partner seems fat, dumb, and happy with things as they are and seem incapable of understanding the situation in its entirety. Mind you that I’m not that special, it’s just very niche and hardly anyone else knows anything about the specific thing that I do.

I jumped ship from the big4 to a tech company recently. Until big 4 becomes tech 1st vs audit 1st you won’t feel satisfied. At the end of the day the business is compliance, risk and selling bodies. Even as we skill up other areas those things come first and anything that doesn’t drive those core metrics and values will be set aside. In the new gig we move quickly, have modern web based tools and focus on getting work done. I can’t describe how different it is. Start looking around for a tech company. You won’t regret it.

I like the sound of your firm! I wish mine stopped thinking Digital has fundamentally changed the nature of economics. I see a whole of of spurious $$$ value associated with Digital and very few hitting the bottom line. That said it hasn’t stopped a few firms raking in cash from clients with FOMO. You should either focus on genuine client impact or go work for Accenture, Deloitte, EY or BCGs digital mafia.

Yeah is it possible your perspective of $ isn’t that meaningful for your firm?

Certainly interested in the Partner perspective as well, but it’s incumbent upon us to understand what our firm culture and leadership values, and make clear eyed decisions to leave if they don’t align with our interests and/or strengths. I face a similar issue at my firm in my practice, and my external conversations are focused on finding a new firm that shares my values. (Not that either of our respective leaders are “bad”, they just value different things than we do, and that’s unlikely to change)

I have a hard time believing that a manager is “developing” new technology and said technology is saving the firm so much $, but is going unnoticed. Something sounds off, my guess is you are probably not providing as much value as you think. Kudos on that level of confidence though!

Well, it’s quantifiable so....

In some areas the old ways die hard.

From your comments, OP, not sure what you hope to get here from the FB community...

OP can you tell us which firm?

I am pretty sure it's pwc from the sound of it. Partner 1 sounds like from pwc as well
