I have general litigation experience - state and federal - but no specialties and nothing in corporate/finance. Do you think firms would look at an LLM in Securities/Finance as an acceptable substitute for legal experience in corporate/finance?

I’m inclined to say no — I don’t think I’ve ever even encountered this and nothing in my experience makes me think it would be particularly valued. I think the general wisdom is that the only LLMs worth doing (unless you hold a foreign law degree and need a US LLM to practice here) are Tax LLMs from certain schools.

Thanks for the insight!

I spent a longgg time digging in to the cost/benefit o pursuing an LLM in my related field. what I found - the LLM must be an applicant component that adds value, if at all, in a rather elusive manner that does not seem to provide the kind of educational credence that I really hoped it would.

Other ideas:

1. volunteer for your state legal aid dept. fhey usually allow volunteers to committ their time on a very manageable time frame (ie 2 hrs a week, etc). They see all sorts of stuff and I am guessing they may consult w small businesses re finance agreements, etc.

2. You could self contract to do ad hoc corporate/ finance document review and work amongst a team at one of many legal consulting firms that seem to be contracting out for document review and which also may be consultants in the financial services industry - which would be a very comprehensive view into precisely the issues and the risk mitigation elements that are most relevant and pressing for companies today.
3. Also, check out some of the bigger consulting firms out of MA, VA and NY to see if they have unique 3-6 month projects that would give you a unique and more specific experience in one area - Compliance in Finance and Government Finance Contract Drafting & Negotiations are more tailored areas of transferrable experience that (imo) are harder to find but nonetheless important when working in corporate finance.
4. Join a local NG org as a volunteer or become a member of an independent board where you would likely need to assist with a wider variety of financing issues.
5. Go work at a national banking association for a year. Compliance at a regional bank that has a mortgage would probably give you a good hands on
