I have had a rough 2 weeks. I was ghosted by the guy I was seeing for 7 months and then today I was laid off from my agency due to them losing clients and not doing well financially. I just feel so

First of all - fuck that guy because I’ve been there. I’ve also been laid off before and it fucking sucks. Get your ass to a computer and sign up for unemployment STAT. Reach out to an old mentor ASAP to get drinks - likely theyll treat you to a drink or two and just cry it all out and start getting the advice and connections. Take the weekend to decompress and be sad. But on Monday i want you to dust yourself off, get dressed and start hitting up all the recruiters you know (are you based in NYC? I’m always up for referral bonuses and happy to refer) get busy and start hustling. Then delete all of your dating apps. Don’t worry about that or men in your life right now - take care of yourself FIRST and treat yourself to something (manicure? A new shirt? A nice sushi to go meal?) and focus that energy that you would have spent on a man on yourself. Workout, read, go to a museum. Just don’t think about him or finding a man. I don’t know if this helps but you’ll be ok regardless

YES, this, this, this!

Sorry, OP! First of all, fuck that guy. Secondly, I know it’s really hard when you’re in the shit to see any kind of silver lining, but in my experience I’ve always landed someplace better. I’d recommend getting your unemployment benefits going ASAP. Look for other easy ways to cut expenses while you’re job hunting. For me, the less I had to stress about money, the better. Also, take some time to grieve. Then make looking for a job your new full time job

like

Oh geez, I’m so sorry. First, be good to yourself and your health. Work out, eat right, and sign up for unemployment as soon as you’re eligible. And try to spend zero time obsessing on the jerk who ghosted you. You know you deserve better.

That sucks and is super shitty. However, all my colleagues who have been laid off have found an even better opportunity within the next few months.. good luck!! It can only go up from here. And on the breakup.. F that guy. Use it to drive you and pull an Elle Woods on your life

Thank you all so much for the kind and helpful words! Also thanks for the job leads you all shared, it is very much appreciated :)

These two things may have happened at a similar time but remember: they are not related! Agency finances and scumbag dude are not related to each other and you should not feel like you’re the common denominator here!

Fuck that guy!! I'm sorry, that hurts. Cut your expenses, file for unemployment and take a few days to clear your head. I've always come out better off after that! Last time that happened to me it was the universe giving me the push I couldn't take on my own. Mercury retrograde ends at the end of the month, so is consider even waiting until then lol. This funk will pass and you'll be way better off! Xo

down. Does anyone have any advice on how to get through this?

Oh no sorry to hear. Getting laid off is SO common in this industry but it is always hard. Definitely sort out unemployment and insurance etc first. Even if it may feel bad right now this is your opportunity to focus on yourself - beyond job and relationship. Honestly how I dealt with it was through a therapist when I was laid off for a second time. Then I started to appreciate my free time during the day and being able to do what I want. Don’t be afraid to seek help professionally and personally through friends, old colleagues etc. Most probably have been there and will be happy to help. Also besides finding a job maybe you can take this opportunity to work on a hobby or learn something new? That has helped me too. Good luck... you’ll get through this!

Serious note to all those posting on LinkedIn offering to write a recommendation for anyone they know who has been laid off. How about just writing it without having to be asked first. The last thing someone who just lost their job wants to do is ask you for help, even if they need it. If you want to make their day, just go ahead and do it. Oh, and don’t write about them in the past tense, especially if they haven’t changed their employment status on LinkedIn.
