I have had an opportunity presented to me to make a switch from the underwriting desk to the agency side as a producer. To my surprise the base pay is equal, however the producer obviously has new and renewal commissions. Am I nuts to leave my strict 40 hour weeks behind for a chance in the sales world? Anyone else make the switch for better or for worse?

Haven’t done this move before but imo, you would be nuts not to take this. You close one deal and you’re making more than you do now, and you get renewal commissions! If it doesn’t work out you can always move back to underwriting.

Sounds like an opportunity for more money but also more work. It depend on your career goals. Are you more interested in salary or work life balance?

The question is, are you a natural sales person? Can you BS with the best of them? You better be a damn good sales person or there is no way I’d give the underwriting job up. In my experience, usually base salary in insurance sales are only for small business roles or they are introductory and then go to commission only after a year or so.

Here lies my issue. I’m 31 and have been in an underwriting role all 8 years now since I graduated, with the same carrier. I have built a strong reputation and have progressed as such. I have never been in a sales role, however I also understand exactly what I would be faced with. Can I BS? Absolutely. Is the potential upside worth the change in my day to day life? That I’m not sure of. You are correct the base salary would continue until my commission exceed my base, then straight commission.

This sounds like an awesome opportunity to me. Like Marsh 1 said, you can always move back to underwriting so why not give the other opportunity a shot?

I'd say you've got quite the gamble on your hands, but there's a ton of faith behind you from the sounds of it. if you roll the dice and it's a dud, well then it sounds like you'd be welcomed back if anything.

I was a producer and only received new business commissions but if you get both new business commissions and renewal I would say go for it.

Any other pitfalls or things to be aware of in the producer world? I have a feeling I would be in for some long hours at the very least to start.

I think it sounds like a great opportunity. You have nothing to lose making the same salary and have opportunity to make more money with commissions

As someone say above, can you BS and sell? I was in Retail part time while in school so I knew I didn’t want to be in Sales especially when its all commission. Being in UW now, I don’t have to, we have Sales people to do that. I rather be behind the scenes and have a stable income. But it all depends on the person. Good luck!
