I have heard that McKinsey allows some BAs to move quickly to EM (although sounds like it’s fairly rare to be in 3 years?). When that does happen, do they manage post MBA associates, or just BAs?

Yes. Our BAs can stay and progress (this used to be uncommon, now it is is more usual). Many make EM 3-4 years in. Others do secondments and return to consulting or leave to persue other passions before returning. They are “proper” EMs and they don’t make the transition unless we believe they can do the job (it is a capability based role transition not tenure based). That job includes (in a traditional small team engagement) owning the problem, owning the everyday client interactions, and managing the team (associates, experts & partners). Managing post MBA associates is but one of the myriad challenges of the role.

Everyone has a manager younger than them at some point in their career. No big deal, OP

Made EM in under 2 years right out of UG; There’s no difference among the responsibilities and privileges of EMs. There’s only a bar of expectations to meet. Sure there’s always personality issues, or client issues, or whatever, but I think everyone has their own challenges. I find it’s a bigger problem when people carry a chip on their shoulder due to age, experience, etc. whether they feel like they have too much or too little for their current role.

Senior BA is the Asociate equivalent though and an actual position / title change

Thanks, @M1 - two follow on questions if you have a POV: 1) You make note of it as a small team engagement - is that typically 2 team members, 3 team members? 2) Have you found it relatively easy to manage egos of the post MBA associates who feel they have significantly more professional experience and take some issue with a 25 year old manager? (Or clients?!) That’s fantastic if the answer is yes, but I’ve seen egos do lots of things even in wonderful people :).

Had a friend make EM 1.5 years out of UG.

Can you still go from BA to Associate or is the only promotion allowed now BA—>EM. If so, do you have classes of BAs where some go to EM and some go to Associate... is that slightly weird?

like

No, you can only go direct to senior BA and then EM. The only way from BA to associate is for something to interrupt your time at the Firm (for example a multi year rotation or b school)

like

And if they do manage associates, how does that feel for the associates?

I know someone at MBB making EM this year, 3 years out of UG. Also depending on the age of the post MBA, it’s not uncommon for them to be managed by someone younger
