I have no clue as to how to help my incoming 4th graders who are reading at a 1st and 2nd grade level. My district uses Lucy Calkins, which supports stable readers. I’am at a lost and I’m stressed

Make sure they have engaging and accessible reading material in their hands, gather baseline data, ensure they’re reading lots and take it one day at a time! You can do this! I have been where you are - slow and steady!

Be good to yourself - Rome wasn’t built in a day! The more they read, the faster they will grow! Be sure to start them with books they enjoy and understand! And have them talking about what they are reading. Good conversation will fuel
Good writing about reading!

The number one way to help students become better readers is to provide them choices and to give them time to read. Also, look at the Florida Center for Reading Research website for 3rd and 4th grade intervention ideas and manipulatives that are ready to print and use...with directions. Read aloud to them to build vocabulary and help them become familiar with text structures and genres. Have them partner read. Provide them with a fluency passage within their ZPD to work on all week.

I am in a very similar situation. We just started using the Units of Study in Reading last year. I teach 4th and many, many of them read at a kindergarten or first grade reading level. I love the Units because they have differentiation built in.
Take it one day at a time, focus on the minilesson, work to put engaging, appropriate books in every students' hands, share your love of reading with them. The Units are super overwhelming, just know that if you stick to them, prepare, and talk to kids about books, it will start to fall into place.

I would check their phonics skills and start instructing them with an explicit, systematic phonics program if the assessment shows that they are weak in this area. You can get a free assessment from Really Great Reading, I believe. We used to believe that if they didn’t have phonics by this age that just weren’t aural learners, but research is showing now that struggling readers need these skills to be explicitly taught to them.

Hi. I have been a resource teacher for years and now have transitioned to second grade. I have students reading levels from K-6 grade!! A great resource is using a program called Reading Simplified, going to the Reading League Youtibe channel, also checking out Florida reading research website and a youtube channel called PATTAN. The last one has amazing resources for teachers teaching reading. I also use Words their Way for help with spelling instruction and word work. I hope some of these resources help?

I have middle school kids who start on that level. Read, read, read. Read aloud, independent reading, small group. They will grow. If they don’t, then testing may be necessary.
