For what it's worth, I feel similar as a manager and feel like the partners I work with are oblivious, as well. I am struggling to get audit work done, so no, I haven't been reaching out to associates much and I feel terrible about that. But if someone at your level did contact me, I would do what lever I could to help, or if I can't actually do anything helpful, I could at least listen and share your concerns upward.
Yes, I agree bring it up. The more people who speak up, the more likely change will be made. And if you end up leaving, at least you know you tried.
I’m an associate that started remotely last year and I share your sentiments, it really feels like I’m on survival mode. There’s no one to really talk to at work aside from my immediate seniors. It seems like everyone is too busy with work to have small talk. I know work isn’t everything but is it weird that I feel lonely at my computer everyday? We’re sitting in the same spot most of the week and it just feels so empty lol
I try to send a nice note to the associates below me as much as I can. I really feel for people who started in this environment. I don’t think it’s weird that you’re lonely at your computer at all. That’s completely normal. I used to be more emotional about that same thing, but now I am resentful haha
Are they starting to allow people back in the office where you live? If so, coordinate with 2-3 colleagues (whether peers or team members) to go to the office on the same day. Likely can’t sit all together in the office, but take the opportunity to go get coffee together, walk to pick up some lunch together, sit in the same proximity together. I’ve done it a couple times - and people were happy to make the commute etc on occasion to get some human interaction. You aren’t alone in feeling this way.
I’m in a small office and I haven’t heard anyone else really talk about wanting to go back. I’ve been asking directors, HR, etc to go back at partial capacity since September. I moved out of the city to stay with family because that was the best option for my mental health.
Even if your’re in a small office, ask if going to the office is an option (it very well could be). Even going to Starbucks or walking to fetch your lunch could be such a refreshing change of pace and scenery.
I’m fortunate enough to be in an office that’s open and I’ve really appreciated getting out of the house to work once a week or so now!
