Keep a record of everything verbal and physical and let your districts psychologist know your requesting an observation of a student to create a BIP if he dose not already have one in place
I agree with this. It's important to bring more people in. There is only so much that you can be expected to do on your own.
I found that reinforcing the other children and ignoring that behavior is one of the best behavior strategies. Remove the other students when he becomes aggressive and leave him with you or the other staff in the room. Take data on everything and request a FBA to assess why he is doing it. Behavior is ultimately communication, so figuring out the reason for the behavior is crucial. Ask the school psychologist to observe and if you have a behavior support staff have them observe as well.

Good advice to speak with your school psychologist. Ask the psychologist for strategies for helping the student. Can you refer to a child study team? Speak with an administrator to find out if the child should be referred to special Ed. Ask the social worker if the child has had significant trauma, and if so, ask for suggestions for dealing with what you describe. I don’t know MD law, but a behavior intervention plan aka BIP, requires an assessment called a functional behavior assessment (FBA) to determine the function/purpose of the behavior so the proper interventions can be planned. In some states, an FBA/BIP can only come from a planning and placement team, (IEP meeting). A consult with a BCBA might help you decide the best route to take to help this kiddo. Hang in there!! Odds are that a child that exhibits violence is or has been a victim of violence.
Definitely start collecting data if they don't have a Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP). You can go online and find Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) charts. They even have some that you can modify. Make a list of all the behaviors that occur in class first. When doing an FBA you want to take the time to adjust the chart so that all you have to do is check. Leave room for comments at bottom of page if something stood out on a particular day. One of the biggest problems I have run into with other teachers is that they forget or don't have time to write a whole paragraph. When you make a list of the behaviors (note the behaviors have to be detailed) make them brief 3-5 word sentence. I know that it will seem like alot but trust you will be thankful later because it will save you time. Another thing is make sure you have a column to put the time of your class in 5-10 minute intervals. Example : 9:00-9:10, 9:10-9:20 etc. this way when the behavior occurs you only have to put a check mark of when the behavior occured but also how oftne within the time frame. I know its alot I have just said but with the data you can go to school psychologist and show the behaviors. Plus ask them to observe the student. This can be passed along to other teachers if they are having the same problem. Also if you are not the special education case manager (unless your teaching regular ed) have you approached them for strategies? Have everything in email this way you have a papertrail. Also have parent communication documentation on hand as well. The first thing that will be asked is if you contacted the parent first. If you have communicated with parent 2x or more that will be a strong start to getting this situation addressed. Sometimes they throw it back on teachers which is a bit unfair especially when they are seeking support. But having all the data and documentation will make your case stronger.

You will need consent by a parent or guardian to do the FBA assessment. Data collection is part of the FBA, hypothesizing the function of the behavior is another part. Is the function related to avoidance, escape, sensory or pain. Good luck. Yes get your psych or soc worker.
Have you talked with the student 1:1? His parents? Do you know his situation? Do they know what they are doing is wrong? Are they capable of knowing? After all this, take the time to treat yourself. Give yourself moments to gather yourself. See if someone else in the school could help or if they have a good rapport with the student.
FBAs and a BIP sound necessary. Someone trained should help with that.
As did what you can do check out PBIS world. It's a website that will help you trouble shoot specific problem behaviors and develop interventions. PBIS is just as much about the interventions as the positives! That's where a lot of schools go wrong in my opinion.
No advice but just wanted to say I totally understand. This is my first year in a sped class. It feels like there’s nothing I can really do. Most of these kids need more than what we can offer through school. Getting head butted, scratched, punched, kicked etc all while trying to change a 10 year olds diaper is definitely not what I was expecting when becoming a teacher. The child themselves can’t communicate any other way and I understand it’s really not their fault. But we as teachers are being put at risk every day. It’s hard.
I guarantee the BIP will have behavior modification strategies included. I recommend getting to know the student. You need to learn what they will work for and it will be included in the BIP.
Are there any supports at home? Can you communicate the concern with parent or guardian? Are you able to talk to student one on one to discuss concerns! This may be difficult but those are two things I would consider!
We just got a person who specializes in ABA therapies to come in and observe and give us ideas. Fingers crossed that it helps my classroom. Is there anything that your special Ed director can do? Any services that your state can offer to help you? It’s so hard when you get an upset stomach driving to work everyday. Just know you are not alone.
Yes you must document document and document. It’s a pain and time consuming but necessary. You must write incident report for each time he acts out and keep emailing psychologists and principal. Stress that you feel the student is a danger to himself and others. This is really important in case someone gets hurt. Also call parents and keep them informed.
BIPS And FBA should be written by behavior specialist or psychologist but it’s an excellent idea to keep data sheet each day so you and your staff can mark time duration of incident. Because we’re so busy it helps to have chart hanging so staff can quickly document. After students leave in afternoon you can get more specific about incident. Be sure to send all this to principal and psychologist.
Functional Behavior Assessments may require an IEP determination with a signature from a parent. This varies by state. From the FBA, a behavior intervention plan is generated. A special Ed teacher may also create an FBA/BIP in certain states as it is a skill requirement in the CEC standards.
You can always take data and bring that data to a child study team or MTSS/RTI committee for tier 1 and 2 assistance. You can also create your own behavior strategies approaches. With behavior, it’s always best to present data and not your opinion (no matter how accurate). When speaking with parents use phrases like “the data shows…” “the data are…” “the data trend indicates.” This way the info is depersonalized. Good luck!
