I don’t even know what a prestigious neighborhood means. And ones that are truly prestigious are probably only affordable for consulting Partners.
However, From what I’ve heard it’s always a good idea to buy the cheapest house in a nice neighborhood. You don’t want to buy the more expensive house in the neighborhood because it won’t appreciate as fast and will kind of put you in a lower tier neighborhood. So no I don’t think this is irrational.
Most money we made on house sales was buying best house in a diverse “on the edge” neighborhood with well built older homes with character. Developing areas great people, mix of incomes but everyone cares about the house and values. If there is some risk, it’s that the area will stall. If you buy into a most prestigious area you’ll pay more, maybe not relate to your neighbors, you’ll pay top dollar and won’t see much appreciation for all you’re doing to keep up. Also weird little things like you’re looked down upon if you do your own work, shovel your walk or leaf clean up.. they are watching you like hawks!
Do you have kids? Being in a more desirable neighborhood for good schools makes sense. But unless you have kids already, you have to realize that even if you got pregnant tomorrow, it would take 5 years before that kid would be school aged.
I think everybody /wants/ to be in the desirable neighborhood, that’s why they’re desirable. It’s just that most people don’t have the budget to make that happen.
To be honest, some of these things are pretty superficial, i.e. high ceilings and nice backyard view. You have to come up with some dealbreakers if you’re serious about buying a house. If you have really high standards and can wait until later to purchase your dream house, then wait to save up and increase your salary.
Everybody wants all the things you listed lol, they're not that crazy. Including prestigious or desirable neighborhoods, that is why they are so expensive. Just start going to open houses, you will get a real feel of absolute must haves and things you can let go.

Not trying to be friendly with those types of people anyway. They can stare and envy my youth while I shovel to their hearts’ content. Bye 👋
Do you already own a house? I’ve found that my wish list changed once I actually bought a home.

They don’t pay us enough to live in a prestigious neighborhood 🤣
