I bring my laptop into meetings with the partners and take notes that way. I have diagnosed dysgraphia though so my handwriting is useless. Never had a problem typing.
Develop your own shorthand system. Takkecthe notes. And then immediately afterward retype it in memo form to the file.

Type in the notes app on your phone?
Are these serious? People would be upset at an associate ensuring they’re taking accurate and complete notes on their phone? My god this profession.
If it’s a new assignment/longer instruction, I explicitly ask the partner if I can record them with my phone. At first it was kind of awkward, but now it’s great because I know exactly what they want. And will relisten to it a few times as I get through each sub task.
Are they going to allow you to do that with clients as well? Not doubting that it is efficient now but all the work you do for senior lawyers is to prepare you to deal with clients.
Record them on your phone 😅😌
Voice memos. Listen. Type/write it out. Delete voice memo when your done.
And how often do people say no?
Type.
I type notes on my phone whenever I go into a partners office and then I email the notes to myself.
For the folks saying why would you do that? Get with the times folks!!! We type everything why would this be any different.

Right? Which of us is not attached to our phone these days? Just explain (the first time) that you’re not texting/ignoring them, you’re taking notes. There’s zero reason why we need to cater to boomers’ need to see us scribble on a yellow legal pad when we’re just trying to be more efficient with, you know, billing a ton of hours for them and their clients. Typing on your phone is hardly “teenager” behavior in 2021. I’m well into my 30s and thankfully my partners (mostly in their 40s) are not dinosaurs.
Just type on your phone or laptop. The fact that people in here are so uptight that being on your phone to ensure accurate note taking because it’s a PhOnE are crazy.
Try to get the key words of the assignment or whatever the instruction is. Or just simply ask them to repeat parts of what they said, sometimes that would reword things better and it gives you more time to write it down.
Short hand. Or bring your tablet and type it out.
Read up on the Cornell Method. Makes sense and seems helpful.
