I have the option to give three weeks notice and still take four weeks off in between jobs but feel guilty that I can afford to be unpaid for so long. Anyone regret taking so much time off between jobs or regret not taking more time off?

DO IT AND NEVER REGRET IT. You only have a few chances to be truly free of work obligations in your life and this is one of them. I switched cities and firms about two years ago and sooo wish I'd taken some time off in between. Take a vacation. Visit family. Binge a dozen TV shows. Literally anything besides checking email and low key worrying someone needs you to do something. Enjoy it!

Do it! I took off 3 months between jobs and it was amazing. So good to refresh. I travelled, spent time with my parents and my friends. I also did random stuff like go and sit in a coffee shop and read books. It was amazing. I would encourage you to do the same if you can afford it! Go and explore local museums, try out new things, spend time with your loved ones, people watch.

Ha I took off 5 months between jobs. It was glorious and 100% worth it.

Well done!

Don’t ever feel guilty for taking time off. I never have looked back and regretted vacation. I have, however, regretted NOT taking time off. You deserve it. Sounds like you’re financially responsible. Enjoy the fruit of your labor. You’re doing great!

like

Op, take the full four weeks. You work hard and need the time.

like

Thanks everyone! Needed this encouragement so that I stopped feeling guilty.

You are never going to look back and think - “Man, I really should have worked those 4 weeks,” but it is entirely possible you could look back and think “Man, I wish I had taken more time off”

Do it and don’t regret it. We were on food stamps growing up and let me tell you, my parents are the FIRST ones to be supportive of my time off/etc. I still look back fondly on the 3 weeks I took off between my lateral move. I timed it so my last day was the first of the month so I had health insurance through the end of the month

like

I wish I thought of this when I lateraled. I had no health insurance for a whole month and racked up medical bills. But it was worth taking 3 weeks off in between.

Just do it. Only reason I wouldn’t is if you have a lot of medical problems and you need good health insurance.

like

Unless you need the health insurance (maybe look into temporary options), please please take the time. I was only able to take a week and a half and it wasn’t nearly enough time. These opportunities don’t come around often.

like

I only took two weeks and I seriously regret not taking more time

like

As long as your finances allow you, you better that time. You’ll only regret not taking it - you’ll never regret enjoying time off

Better take**

Who tf would regret taking time off before starting a grueling new job???

I took 7 weeks off and it was the best decision I’ve ever made. Throw that guilt out the window and enjoy your funemployment!!!

I took off two weeks between my last job change. Wish I’d taken a month or more.

If you have the luxury of taking R&R, do it. If you’re starting a new job it may be a while before you can do it with the new gig, so enjoy it while you can.

I took four weeks off between jobs. Part of the time was used for moving, but it is still amazing how fast that time flew by. Take the time off and enjoy the well-deserved break!!

like

I just did this. I really, really needed it. I may never get 4 weeks off of work without responsibilities ever again in my life.

like

Do not feel guilty! Good for you that you have managed your finances prudently to where such a break is an option! My mom took a few months off when I was young, and to this day she still talks about how much she loved that summer. So do it! Take advantage of such an opportunity.

Take the time. Catch your breathe. Congrats on the new job!
