I have three years of experience in agency recruiting and HR. I’m currently making 47k as an HR Coordinator. I’m starting to feel bitter that I took a pay cut to transition to HR from agency recruiting so I put myself open to recruiters on LinkedIn and got a Sr Recruiter contract offer with a company that I’m familiar with for $38/hour. I don’t love the company’s culture so I’m going to keep looking but would it be worth leveraging the offer with my current org? I’ve only been there for 7 months

I’ve been in a similar situation before. The way I’ve always thought about it is you should be prepared to accept the other offer if your company can’t match the other offer or do something to help you out. Of course you don’t have to view it this way but I would wait until you have something you’d seriously consider because you only get one shot with using it at your current employer so it should be worth your while.

like

I agree with this perspetive, if you're not fully into taking the offer, I wouldn't leverage it then because you have to be prepared for them saying you should walk away. I think you can have a separate convo around revisiting pay around the 1 year mark and bring up market rates/offers

like

I personally think it would be worth speaking to your leadership about. At worst, they simply tell you they can't make a change to your current compensation. They may make other concessions to keep you though. Good luck!

Thank you for the advice!

I think it's poor form to bring this to your organizations attention if you don't intend to accept the potential offer.

If I were your manager and you told me "this other job opportunity / company offered me more money than what you're paying me" - it would totally rub me the wrong way. I would personally be much more receptive to an employee making a business case for their individual value and contributions to the team and leveraging that for a salary increase instead.

like

No, I wouldn’t use your contract offer as leverage with your current company. A wise manager isn’t going to pay you a recruiter salary for a coordinator role. I’d do a pros and cons list of being an employee vs. a contract recruiter and revisit why you changed in the first place. If you want to be on the company side but want more money get a year of experience as a coordinator and then look for in-house recruiter roles.
