I have to vent... I’m all for male/female equity in our and any industry. But, the one thing that gets to me is the number of Moms I’ve worked with that get to work from home on Friday because of it.

This is such an antiquated question on so many levels! First of all, you should be able to work from home regardless of your parental status. Secondly, the fact that you don’t understand how many parents - especially moms - have a full time job and come home to another full time job and hardly have time for themselves so maybe the two hours they save commuting actually lets them do more work yet people like you still bitch, is insane. And you don’t even ask to work from home, yet complain. The fact that you think it will diminish your role is also such an out dated view. It’s 2019. We have staff members who work from home in a remote state 100% of the time. Beauty of technology, my friend.

OP - thanks for posting! Good to know people with this point of view are still out there. WFH is a normal occurrence in my office, regardless of gender or parenting status. It often means we get more work done without office distractions. Honestly, one day a week of WFH should not be an excuse to forget a team member. You mentioned your previous employers did not have a favorable view of working from home. That helps explain your current frustration. I hope you can embrace the way the industry is changing and find the benefits that WFH offers. Maybe your team needs better digital collaboration tools?

I’m a mom who works from home on Fridays. I work from home on Friday’s because I earned it, not because I’m a mom. Maybe you didn’t earn in.

likehelpfulfunny

You don't earn something just because you say you've earned it. Same way you're not a good parent just because you think you are. Your kids and others decide that.

I’m childless and also work from home Fridays.

I’m a junior and a mom, and I work remotely around once per week. Friday my kid didn’t have school, and I worked from home while he minded his own business. Advocate for yourself, or work somewhere where it’s in the handbook. I’ve been in this industry for less than a year, but no way do I feel I had to have “earned it.” I get my work done; working smarter is not something someone needs to allow me if they so please.

Compared to working from home with a toddler there, working for your ass in the office is like a vacation. Trust.

Your question explains your own predicament. Because mean aren’t really given the same expectations when it comes to working from home or even providing equal share in care taking, it falls on the woman to make these arrangements. Men are far less likely to ask.

Not that this is super relevant to the original post but at my agency people can wfh if they need to tend to their families AND some people bring their kids to work sometimes too. It’s pretty great and i love it when I see kiddos around the agency.

Kids are so good to break the tension. There were times my day was going down faster than EA’s stock, but seeing a kid running or just being silly saved the day lol

Meaning, because they’re a Mom they get to work from home. I’m a Dad, but I can’t work from home. Does seem fair.

Tell me working from bed has been normalized by now. I thought that was the line I would never cross with WFH, but I’ve crossed it. Obviously still take meetings from my desk. This shouldn’t be anything to feel guilty about right? EDIT for context - I still live in a small apartment so there are limited options for where to work besides my desk - and sitting in one place all day is VERY draining - feel like this is probably an issue mostly for younger consultants

Hi! I have two offers and I’m not sure what to do. One is with a small firm that serves as outside counsel to medical practices (leasing, employment issues and acquisitions are primary work load) and the other is in-house for a pharmaceutical company (managing outside counsel, vendor contracts, privacy). The firm pays much better (1800 hours, flexible wfh) but I feel like the experience in house would go further in becoming a GC down the road. Please help!

Does anyone else feel like WFH has made higher ups notice you more? I feel like when we were in the office I was always judged by my looks, how young I was, my ability to make small talk, etc., but not the content or quality of my work. Now that the only thing they have to judge me on is my work, it seems like everyone wants to work for me. Don’t get me wrong, I’m grateful but also TERRIFIED to go back in the office and watch all that momentum go down the drain.

I have so much mom guilt sending my baby to daycare. She’s 6 months old. The transition has been harder on me than her (she seems fine and happy, just isn’t sleeping well there yet) but I wonder if I should try and find a different solution. Part time nanny, part time daycare? We can’t afford a nanny full time. If I’m WFH and we have a nanny part time is it realistic that I’d see her during the day or am I kidding myself?
