If you’re going to try that you have to be prepared to walk. Your current co could balk and then what are you going to do? If you stay, you’ll look like a jerk and they’ll question your desire to be there. Which means you could be one of the first to be let go if a RIF is needed. It’s a risky move.

If you have a good relationship with your report (or anyone above you), throw some time on their calendar to explain “I got these offers, but I feel like I still have opportunity at our agency.. Can we discuss a raise since this is my value in the market?” Basically don’t offer up an ultimatum, make it conversational.

Single filer, I ended up owing taxes both to the IRS and the state. All I had was some interest income and some minor dividend income besides the salary. I can't seem to figure out why I owe taxes when nothing has really changed except income growth over the years. I expect the company payroll to take out taxes as required given the annual salary, so shouldn't really be too much of a surprise beyond paying some tax for interest income. Anyone got any ideas?

How do sick days work? Just realized that 1/3 of my “PTO” is actually sick days (and it’s not generous and you don’t get paid out when you leave). I’m very lucky to not get sick but does that mean in order to use some I’ll have to spontaneously say I’m ill with little advanced notice? Seems like a policy which rewards people for leaving their team in a lurch.

A question for Big 4 peeps - if you know the salary range in the group you wanna go for is 150k to 170k, how much should you say when the HR asks you how much you want? Is 180k too much to start with? (Didn’t want to start with 170k since they will only come back with lower I assume)

Self-directed IRAs. So many questions! Have any of you ever tried a self directed IRA? I’m thinking about it in relation to investing in a company (to the tune of 150-200k) or possibly purchasing a vacation property as an investment in a location we’d like to retire (if I did that, could we use it to vacation personally occasionally in the meantime? Even if we needed to pay the IRA for the rental?) Thoughts? Warnings?

Hi guys, I am due to start working at EY soon within audit. I will be commuting to the office by train when in the Birmingham office. This will be from Leicester. Usually if a commute is about 1.5 hours+, Mazars authorises hotels. Is there a similar policy at EY? When not in the office I would prefer to drive to clients, not sure if me being in Leicester affects whether they will tell me to suck up an extended commute? Would a mileage claim be from the office to the client? Thanks!
