Always worth negotiating. What year are you? What is your end goal..partner?
Reason I asked is because depending on your end goal your ultimate decision may change. If goal is in house, going to the AMlaw200 would probably set you up better simply because of the name recognition of the firm. However, if the goal is to become partner, the boutique may serve you better. As I’m sure you know, becoming partner is significantly harder at big firms. Chances are as a new partner you’ll be targeting mid market clients, many of which will have conflicts with existing, bigger firm clients; and you’ll always lose that conflicts battle. Going to a boutique allows you to actually bring in business without having the same conflicts concern. All that being said, if the decision is strictly a financial one, I would definitely negotiate. They may not match the big firm salary but even if they meet you half way, the difference in salary will be marginal and will take finances out of the equation when making your ultimate decision
You are going to work hard either way. Get paid for it.
