If you can get to fp&a role without b4 why would you go to b4? Most ppl do it to egt the financial analyst role
yeah I know some people try to get fp&a after big4. I just feel having a big4 public accounting experience will give me more exit options in the future. I haven’t start the fp&a role yet so I’m not sure I will 100% want to stay there. If I come back to fp&a after big4 then I can get promoted quicker to a higher managerial level due to more solid experience I had in public accounting. If I choose to grow in fp&a then I am not sure how long it will take me to be promoted to manager level and whether there is a ceiling. But I am still not very sure that restarting as an entry level auditor is a good transition. Brainstorming crazy here.
I did this: 2 years as staff auditor at a small local firm, then 2 years IA in a publicly traded company, then wrapping up 2 years as a senior at a big 4. Now going back to industry.
It's a lot of hopping around, but i was late entering my career due to health reasons. From leaving IA and going back to industry in banking, my base is 45% more over a 2 yr period. I thought I needed big 4 experience with my CPA, but not sure that it was really necessary. Looking back, i wish had stayed at the publicly traded company and moved out of IA internally. The pay increase going the job hopping route is nice, but wasn't worth the BS in big 4.
Thank you! I like your story and I feel our differences is that you have the public accounting experience but I don’t have. I was looking at the posts online and a lot of people are emphasizing public accounting experience and many of them said big4 experience worth it. That’s why I am so curious about big4 and I thought I may regret and keep thinking about this if I don’t move to big4, but I know on the other side a lot people say the FP&A opportunity is great. I think I may take the FP&A first and try it and then see if I still want to move to big4.

Yeah the masters alone is qualification for entry level
I dont think you will find the long term competency working in b4 unless you are there for many many years.
Also, (regardless of my point above) don’t sell yourself short - def apply to experienced auditor position - you qualify. You will also be looking at a likely big pay decrease in a starting associate b4 salary.
If you can easily transition into FP&A at your current company i would def want that on my resume over big4. Especially if you’re unsure of what you want to do.
Thank you! Your advice means a lot to me and I will think carefully when I make this important career decision.
If you have a degree in accounting, then yes, you are qualified to be an audit staff. After that, it’s just how about well do you interview. If you can carry on a normal personable conversation and appear motivated and dedicated, you’ll be fine.
