I have used butterfly needles for phlebotomy since the beginning of my Nursing career. I recently switched jobs and my current employer doesn’t want to buy butterfly needles as they are more expensive than the straight needles. They have asked that we start using the straight needles and even took away the last butterfly needles we had. I feel anxious and uncomfortable doing phlebotomy on everyone with the straight needle. Should I mention this to my manager? How can I approach this situation?

I think it is fair to share this with your supervisor, coupled with helping come up with a solution that gets you feeling more comfortable with straight needles. Share what you just mentioned above and say, my goal is to get more comfortable with straight needles but can we have butterfly needles on standby for harder sticks in the meantime. And I’ll touch base with you in a few weeks to update you on my progress and comfortability.
Good luck.

I also had only used butterfly needles in the hospital, but when I switched over to a different setting all they had were straight needles and butterflies were reserved only for hard sticks. Just like all we do, it just takes a little time and soon you’ll be comfortable using straight sticks. We have 2 different sizes which I like. Im confident that you’ll do great! I agree with the message above to ask if you could keep some on hand for harder sticks,

We have been told butterflies are having a supply issue and our phlebotomists are short so we’ve assumed responsibility to draw ( amongst all things ) if they don’t have enough to staff… and we are given large straight needles … set up for failure

Thanks for your comment.
I heard about the supply issue.
It looks like we don’t have many options

Hi, I’m 30yrs old and by next week I will be 31yrs old. Got married 2 yrs ago and we have been trying for kids from past 7 months but no luck, we try to have sex almost all 7 days of fertile window. I get my periods regularly, I don’t have thyroid nor PCOD. My Gyn did all test, and everything looks fine, my ovaries, Fallopian tubes , harmonies. Do I need to see fertility doctor ,if so, how is the best fertility doctor near Boston area. Need inputs for next steps before it’s too late 😒

Hi everyone, I'm not sure if this the right avenue to post this question. Does anyone have experience with Provera? My Gynie prescribed the tablet with 3 refills. Is there a more natural method to indice the period.
History: I was on Mirena IUD 2 x for 10 yrs. Depot for 1.5 yrs before this and then Alesse 21 + 28 and the patch. I am 35 yr old. I had a miscarriage at 20. I don't believe my Gynie advocates for me as his (yes HE). I always feel like he is in a rush. 1|2

I said I’d think about it over the weekend but really am looking for at least 110k. Have to sell my house and move and rebuy w higher interest rates. What do you think??

Within the next 18 mo I will be considered for taking over a nurse management job in the OR. This is a small rural hospital in the Midwest. I’m already currently absorbing some of the job responsibilities, especially when the current manager is OOT. I do not get compensated for the extra work done in her absence but will soon be expected to train into that roll in the months prior to her retirement. Do I ask for raise before I agree to train into that roll? What is that job worth?
