I'm leaving for similar reasons. I love my team, the rest of the company has gone downhill. As soon as I told them I was leaving, they all started on their exit strategies. One is already on his notice, one at final interview stage and the other is interviewing. I did feel bad about potentially abandoning them but you shouldn't set yourself on fire to keep others warm. Makes me happy that they're on their way to freedom though.

Thank you for the response, yeah it's such a toxic environment now. I genuinely have have anxiety that I'm going to be asked to work directly with the CTO again and he without a shadow of a doubt the worst person I've worked with. I will help my team as best as I can but I can invisage they will likely choose to leave as they've said as much. I keep thinking about them too much but I need to think about myself. I will likely keep in touch with them as we have a close friendship now too.

I would run. Eventually, the negative aspects are going to reach as far as that team and will affect you too. Get out while you can still do it unscathed.

Yeah I'm trying my best to shield the team but that just means I get the brunt of it. I love them but I can't stand the company anymore

Leave. You owe nothing to a toxic leadership. Don't put in a 2 weeks notice. Put in enough time where you can help your team get their projects to a point where your transition won't leave them hanging and you can prepare your successor. If your team is as great as you say they are, they'll be fine without you and they'll appreciate that you're looking out for them. Your company is a sinking ship so you can either get on a lifeboat on your terms or go down with the captains who you don't even respect.

Thank you, yeah unfortunately my notice is 2 months, but I now know of the shady practices in place and can probably negotiate that down if needed. My problem with the handover is it will be with the CTO who I cannot deal with, the only person I've ever shouted at, although I might be able to refuse the handover to him with HR. I think my team will just leave as they can see what's going on and don't like it, but I shield them for the most part.

Everyone here is making some valid points - do not sacrifice yourself for the good of others. You don't really know what the other team members are up to, and at the end of the day, all you can do is make it an easy transition. And you leaving can set the tone for others to feel okay about leaving something so toxic, so put yourself first!

Yeah it's not even the worst crap he's done, most recently reported his friend who got him his job for something and now he's suspended pending review and will likely get fired. I'm trying to figure out how I can benefit on exit, or leave quicker without any notice. The problem is bonuses are being announced this week so I have to be here for next month's pay packet, they elongated this whole process of bonuses across 3 months now to stop people waiting for them from leaving. But I'm also getting anxiety around talking to the CTO as he's a dictator and arrogant. One of the fellow colleagues hired through the CEOs wife so until he has reached probation there is no way he's going anywhere. Sorry I'm also kind of venting.

Don't give yourself too much credit, EVERYONE is replaceable. There will be a temporary vaccum, which will get filled by providing others opportunity. That opportunity make come as being your replacement, or has been suggested, it may come as motivation to jump from a burning ship.

Yeah this is a good thing in my opinion as that means hopefully they'll let me go without much hassle. My team have previously said if I leave they're leaving which would be an interesting event. Now I just need to find the next Job, hopefully a good culture this time.
