I haven’t gotten a single nibble on my remote in-house applications. Are there certain states that living there would make me an automatic no? I have seen some companies list certain states you must live in and my state is never on the list. I don’t apply to those, but other descriptions don’t list states, and I do apply to those jobs.

Competition is worse than ever now that the entire country can apply for the job. Gotta know somebody.

I’d try figuring out who the hiring manager is right after you apply and reaching out to them via LinkedIn.

like

Not sure; I’m guessing that if you’re reaching out to a bunch of them, it could seem spammy. But I did this recently and it ended up in an offer. If they were annoyed, they hid it very well. 🤷‍♂️

Would you mind sharing what state you’re in? Maybe there are laws that make remote work less feasible in your state

like

It could also be a problem of supply and demand. Seems like for every one remote position, hundreds of people are applying. Have you tested the waters with any local companies?

like

Remote positions are very tough. I have had similar experiences - interest has been from local companies. I’ve had referrals for remote positions for companies that I know operate in my state. It’s a very tough market out there as it seems “we” all want remote in-house jobs. I have no advice, just offering my experience.

There might be something to this. I just accepted a full remote in-house offer where I can live in any state, but my firm just told me in the counter that they have a list of 37 states that I could move to and work remotely from. AD said she understood it had something to do with tax laws, but there may be more nuance to it than that.

Might be limited to states in which they’re officially registered / qualified to do business?

like

Same experience here

There ate tax consequences of having employees based there. If there are already enough employees in that state it’s not an issue but once you start having employees in a new state depending on what your work entails company needs to register to do business, pay taxes (income, sales, benefit related) so the cost and maintenance adds up

Can anyone recommend a recruiter for U.S. attorneys looking to lateral abroad (or to firms where it may be possible to work fully remotely from abroad)? I love my job, but due to family circumstances would really like to relocate abroad and continue working in U.S. Big Law. The country I'd be relocating to is one where many U.S. firms have offices, so hopefully it wouldn't raise tax issues/is possible. But I'm skeptical that my current firm would be ok with fully remote, hence seeking out info.

I just received a job offer at a company I'm very interested in working for (yay!). Their salary offer, however, is at the bottom end of the range specified in the job ad. In my initial interview, I said that my salary expectations align with the range specified by the ad. So, my question is do I ask for more? Or do I just accept the offer? The company benefits are decent and I would get stock options, and it's fully remote - if that influences your answer.

What do y'all think?

My GF has trouble standing up for herself. She's on client travel and one of her co-workers made her really upset (very uncalled for and should have never happened). She called me crying. After consoling her I told her that she needs to go to her manager and possibly HR (yes it's to that level).
She told me she can't and she's not that person (she thinks she'll get the other person fired). She knows that she should and hates that she doesn't stand up for herself. What can I do to help?

Additional Posts in In-House Counsel

I went in-house 3 years ago. At the time, I was interviewing with 2 companies. One company was a much better cultural fit for me and I was 1 of 2 finalists. But they chose the other applicant. I got the other job and have been there ever since. The work is ok,but I still struggle with company culture daily. 3 years later, the original job that I wanted has been reposted. Reach out to the GC directly to show interest? Is it worth moving from a comfy job just bc I think the culture will be better?
