I haven’t negotiated job offer before and trying to help my spouse with an offer in healthcare and would love your advice: she told them upfront her range was 75-80k and they said that was fine, and she was offered 72k. Even on Glassdoor, the average salary for her position at this company is 75k. Additionally, she has to pay her old company 5k to leave. How should she make the case for both a salary raise to 75-80k and a $5k sign on?

The $75K shouldn't take much more than, "$75K is the lower end of my range and I was expecting something closer to $80K given the recent increases in wages throughout the economy."

The $5K sign-on is worth asking for, but may not be feasible (sometimes it's just not offered for certain roles and exceptions can be challenging). "Is there a sign-on bonus offered as well? This seems to be comon for this type of role and I'm hoping to offset the $XK it will cost me to leave my current role."

Thank you, this is helpful!

They're lowballing. Be prepared to walk. They're not starting on the right foot with the market as hot as it is right now.

So right. Gotta keep that in mind

Is it even worth it to try and negotiate? - say she gets it to 80k. Think about progression and what they will offer for raises etc. I'd probably submit one counteroffer and tell them to take or leave and then move on.

Agree with D1, 80k + 5k sign on.

like

Have her ask for what she wants.

$80K base
$10-15K sign on

They may negotiate from there. If she feels the need to qualify the bump then cite available data for the role and her experience.

Definitely - I appreciate it

Great advice in the thread. Agree to make a solid specific counter and wait for a response.

Also another way to frame the sign on bonus is as a “make me whole” one time payment.

Rather than asking for a sign on bonus it sometimes helps to contextualize the one time bonus. I’ve been able to throw in 401k vesting or missing out on my current job’s bonus if I were to stay.

Thanks for this - she’s going to do just that, intentionally not calling it a bonus, but a one time payment to cover the repayment she’ll owe

like

Does the new company know about the 5k payment?

Are benefits comparable or better than old job?

I'm not a great negotiator but I know I've gotten more money in the past to make up for deficiencies in benefits.

They didn't give your partner the salary they said would be suitable, so you can say no. You have financial reasons to say no to 72 (easier to pay back that 5k at 80k).

Market is hot, it'll be cheaper for the new company to pay your partner a bit more than leave the role open

Hello amazing people! - I recently transitioned into a "Senior" CSM role and I was hoping to get some direction with regards to continued career growth. I've navigated politics and growth decently thus far. But, it would be great to get a real framework built to continue towards a "Director" or "VP" role in the next 2-3 years.

Do any of you have suggestions or contacts in the career coach arena? Or any suggestions in general on how to get to the "next level"? I'm in Automotive FinTech / SaaS
