I hear a lot of posts suggesting that you talk to the manager of the team you'd be working for before you join the team. (especially at Amazon). What are some of the things that you'd ask the manager and what would you look for in that conversation?

You can ask the manager about the dynamics of the team. Inquire about the expectations and the pacing.

I like to ask my leadership about (in order of my priorities):

What success looks like, and how they like to "measure" that with actual examples of what they're looking for. I put quotes around measure because it's sometimes not an exact science.

How to communicate with them. How they feel about the ways I like to communicate. Are they comfortable the way I like feedback. How much are they willing to work with me as I learn to work with them.

Asking about development of team members. Especially as a Sr. Engineer (me), I really enjoy helping and guiding newer-to-industry people than me in their engineering growth.

I also like a manager that I can joke with.

I have been in a weird funk lately and slightly unmotivated. I love what I do, but somedays I feel that I should be making more. Any thoughts on how to deal with this?

I know the latter is what a lot of people prefer but in my experience it’s a lot to manage if you have a separate resume for each role you apply to
