I honestly think I’ve developed PTSD from sitting still in the office for many hours everyday. Most days I feel panicked and stuck and can’t concentrate. Does this happen to you ? How do you deal?

Yes, I can relate. Usually I’m too busy to leave my desk, so I feel guilty if I do. However, mentally it helps to get up and walk around every hour, even if it’s just a circle around your office floor. It’ll actually make you more productive in the long term. Music or podcasts for easy background noise help with feeling isolated and lonely. Designate lunch time with a friend.

When I feel panicked and can’t concentrate, I try some combination of: playing music I really enjoy, walking outside briefly for coffee, and sitting on the floor away from my desk to meditate for 10 minutes (with the door closed).

like

Yeah. I’ve had lunches at my desk everyday too. It’ll probably help to leave my desk more often.

Don’t worry, once you get senior enough the script flips and you start feeling panicked and helpless when you’re not in the office

I echo leaving the office to get coffee! Another associate and I take a walk to a local coffee shop at least 1-2x a week. ~20 min break but very refreshing

like

Totally. I enjoy the commiserating with other associates, but then I have to check myself because we go down a rabbit hole of negativity. Gotta find a middle ground.

The coffee advice is great! But I would also suggest seeing a doctor. I did, and it turned out what I always thought was just general anxiety / personality flaws was actually ADHD. Medication changed my life. Not saying you have a medical problem, just couldn’t hurt to consult with a doctor.

like

Yes, it changed my life as well. Lifted a weight that it wasn’t my “personality flaws.”

Yes being alone in an office all day is not fun. I take breaks throughout the day-talk to others, go out when I can and leave the place at a decent time. Also, i echo listening to music or whatever to get in a better mood

like

Plan lunches, get on someone's calendar and go. Maybe not every day but it is something to look forward to. Also regular exercise at some point in the day really helps with the rest of the day. Take the stairs to go see that colleague you need to talk to about work. And coffee :) Definitely coffee.

Sitting still ? Does that mean you have no work?

Or look into appeals

like

I’m often stuck in an office by myself too. It’s highly demoralizing, try and find someone you can talk to, and if that doesn’t work, explore other career opportunities.
