I hope this administration implements Federal parental leave. I don't understand how and why we still tout ourselves as the greatest country in the world, and we don't even have basic paid parental leave.

OP, D1 can correct me, but I believe the sum of points against federal payments are: 1 - Opportunity cost is lost when staff take FMLA as they are not working. Federal payments would encourage the use of FMLA limiting resource availability. - My response is that this is using economic pressure to disadvantage lower income workers by minimizing child bonding time. 2 - Federal payments impinge on the rights of employers and employees to negotiate benefits like parental leave. - I question if OP negotiated his own benefits with Deloitte or accepted what was offered. In reality, people need jobs and lower income workers typically have less marketable skills and less negotiating power. 3 - Federal payments would need tax increases to pay for themselves. - This is true. D1, am I on track with your points?

Is 210 enough to live an upper middle class life in Dallas? Not trying to come off as shallow just genuinely trying to understand. Have a $300K offer in NJ and $210k offer in Dallas (single income, small family) and want to make sure I’m able to give my family a great life. Dallas seems like amazing place to raise a kid, but it’s also not as cheap as everyone seems to think. The houses we want are $650-$700K range. Insight appreciated

I am 35 years old, and I threw my desktop keyboard at my monitor and broke both. I did this because I was playing a videogame and I didnt finish the level I needed to in the correct amount of time. I did it because I got mad other people can finish the level so easily but I cant seem to. I never feel good enough, and I think it stems from my father for 18 years telling me I am never good enough. Now I never know if I see myself as unworthy because its true or im conditioned to believe it.

Big picture question: How did you settle on a FIRE number? Originally I did the simple "estimated annual living expenses divided by 4% rule", but am now second guessing that for many reasons. For example, if I want to live on 70,000 per year, I'll need 1.75MM... but what if 70,000 in 20 years won't be a ton of money? Also, what about saving up for kid's college funds? How to account for the possibility of tax law changes? So many questions!

I have a close family member that has asked me to "write a letter," as her attorney, to a service provider who she believes is in breach. I don't mind doing it, but I'm not sure whether I can engage her without bringing her into my firm as a client. Because of our relationship, I wouldn't bill her, but it doesn't seem like I should bring in clients to my firm without billing them. How are these situations normally handled?

How tough is it to lateral to a larger bank, or to exit into corp dev/strategy at a "large cap" company at the VP-ish level? I'm currently in IB at a smaller MM bank, but kind of trapped until I get my green card which obviously will be a few years. I don't hate my bank/team but I do feel limited by the bank (since obviously reputation/size dictates the deals the bank can win)

Would you take the following offer: Base - ~$180K; Bonus - ~$30K; RSU - ~$15k; Total Comp - ~$225K; F500 firm, not tech, mid-west, individual contributor role with potential for senior roles in 2 years. Good WLB, but not the most interesting industry. Currently working at a T2 Strategy Consulting firm, 2.5 years out of a T10 MBA. $200K all in. 7 YoE. Happy with consulting so far and performing well, but would like better WLB. How much better are tech exit ops given SF cost of living?
