Hi! My daughter has CMPI and I’m still EBF at 13 months. You can do it! Earth balance soy free butter, enjoy life chocolate chips, oat milk for coffee and ice cream, coconut or oat milk yogurt. I still don’t have any DF cheeses I like, so no recommendations there. You will stop craving dairy stuff and the vegan stuff starts to taste ‘normal’ after a while. DF breastfeeding groups on Facebook are also super helpful!
You can do it! It’s super overwhelming at first. Get in the habit of reading every single label and soon enough, you’ll have an established list of safe foods and things will come second nature. There’s typically always a safe alternative, it just takes some searching to find. The FB groups wrre so key to me, they have done all the work or finding safe options. Many have lists (by store), of safe options (with exact brands, packaging, etc to look for). Plus, strength in numbers 💕 it helps to not feel alone, or like you’re crazy for trying to take it on.
I went through this with both of my boys and had to cut out all dairy, soy and gluten at the same time to help them until they slowly grew out of it. Best brands I can recommend are SO Delicious, Canyon Bakehouse, Earths Balance, Enjoy Life, VANS, Daiya, Applegate, Dr. Pragers and Kinnikinnick, hope this helps! I know it’s challenging but they make so many great products and non dairy foods now that it’s a lot easier to give up than u think- u can do it! Good luck!
Pro
-Ciao for cheese - not the greatest but something is better than nothing
-Love love love siggis coconut milk yoghurts. Super yum and min sugar
-I prefer Whole Foods brand of organic almond milk over anything for smoothies
-Oatly oat milk for coffee - the best
-Lily’s dark chocolate
- I use almond butter instead of butter and I use sesame oil instead of butter. Haven’t found a sub I love yet
- nutritional yeast as a sub for Parmesan. Haven’t tried but I’ve heard people swear about it.
Good luck with everything!
Did you try ghee instead of butter?
Why can't you eat lactose free just because not lactose intolerant? Our child is both dairy and gluten free. We love the brand Koko Dairy free. Get their yoghurt and nutrition boosted uht milk. We also get violife cheese and butter.
I meant I cant eat lactose free food that otherwise contain milk protein as it's the milk protein he is allergic to.
If you are interested in chocolate bars choose dark chocolate and read the label - there are a lot of options
I don’t have a favorite brand of non-dairy milk - I’d buy different options (soy, almond, oat, coconut - there’s probably more) until you figure out what you like. If you are drinking it straight or putting it in cereal it will not taste like cows milk (not bad, just different).
There are a lot of substitutes now - I’ve noticed lots of “fake” butter options, a lot of top ice cream brands have non-dairy options (Ben and Jerry’s is one). Cheese isn’t the same - honestly, if you can I’d not try to replace it and just do without. That said, there are some nut-based “cheese” spreads that are good (but don’t taste like cheese)
Also, read labels - for example, some sandwich bread has milk in it, a lot do not.
I didn’t go cold turkey on eliminating dairy but i don’t really miss things (and in your case it’s most likely temporary).
I like the Ripple brand for milks and Nutpods for coffee creamer. I can’t believe it’s not butter has a vegan butter that I prefer (earth balance is also good). Daiya mozzarella cheese does the trick for me when I NEED cheese on something but their other types of cheese are terrible. I like So Delicious brand yougurts. And for dessert, Talenti has a vegan dark chocolate “ice cream”. Also Oreos are dairy free!
It is hard to find a perfect swap - for example, I love queso, so on my fajitas I use cashew queso and it does the trick but it’s not very good by itself so if I want something with chips, I know guacamole is a better option.
It’s tricky at first but you’ll get the hang of it!
Thanks!!
also - primal kitchen salad dressings, and their dairy free avo oil based vodka sauce is delish!
OP having made the transition to vegan, you’re also gonna feel better!! I don’t have specific brand loyalty but ahu non dairy milk at Costco is what I buy in bulk
I developed an allergy to milk protein 2 years ago.
I just eventually accepted that cheese is not my food anymore. Not only all substitutes taste funny, but when I read ingredients I don’t understand the half of them.
Rising Star
Whole Foods has a lot of fun foods that are dairy free. Maybe treat yourself to some to try at least at the start so hopefully you won’t feel like you’re missing out! Siete has a great cashew queso dip (the white one is better than the yellow). SoDelicious has some awesome dairy free ice cream, try the snickerdoodle flavor.
I love this brand!!
Oat milk is my favorite non-dairy milk. Country Crock plant-based butter with avocado oil is delicious, tastes just like butter. Gardein does great fake meat and the Impossible meat is the best one.
You probably already know this, but try looking into the whole 30. There will be a lot of great recipes and approved brands that you may find interesting
Oh my gosh!! Oatly is THE best.
You should also be able to eat ghee, which is clarified butter with all milk solids removed. Total game changer!
PwC, thanks!
Question - is it the additives to milk that he’s allergic to or the milk itself?
There was a big movement a few years ago to go directly to milk farmers rather than mass produced store bought milk. Raw milk supposedly contains enzymes that help the body along with nutrients removed in the manufacturing process.
(Raw milk may be illegal in some states)
While I def don’t suggest putting your son in any harms way have u heard about or tried raw milk ?
Cow milk protein intolerance or CMPA for allergy.
Coconut milk was the one for me, and goat cheese as a cow milk replacement. That’s not vegan but I love goat cheese.
Unfortunately, more than 90% of the time immune system mistakes goat milk for cow milk and produces the similar response
OP, I just saw that Ben & Jerrys offers vegan chocolate chip cookie chunks... so hunt those down!
I generally don’t ingest substitues for dairy except for Minor Figures Oat M*lk (in my espresso in the am) so no vegan cheese or yogurts for me... I find most are highly processed products anyway. Can you re-train to do without those foods in your home?
Did you consider A2 milk?
