I internally scoff every time someone who worked 60h+ week and travel extensively says that their family comes first. I grew up in the circle of kids in similar circumstances and I cannot stress enough how delusional that is. So many kids who treat their parents like a fountain of cash with a bit of love sprinkled in. At least a fair amount of the parents learnt to regret it later on in life.

I was one of those kids. My dad immigrated to this country and worked his butt off to give my family a better life. Weekends were sacred time with him - and whenever he was able to, he joined us for family dinners (we always ate together as a family, even if was just with my mom). When traveling, we had evening good night calls - he was super involved in school and extra curriculars. Im sure it was a lot for him, but he made it look easy. I never once doubted that he cared.

I’m super close to my parents today. I appreciate their hard work and sacrifice. I absolutely believe that family comes first for them - they taught me the same values, while working hard to give me a life beyond what they had.

100% accurate.

No matter the mental gymnastics they want to use, they just can't be there.

I get my kids every morning, do half of drop off and pickups, every bath, bedtime, etc. all during the week.

like

I think that arguably the biggest thing is that sometimes the kid needs you and you need to be there 100%. 100% present, 100% priority. My dad took my call all the time, but it’s always him stepping out from an important meeting. Yes, he prioritized me, but I’m still an inconvenience in a way.

Interesting confession. Do you factor in the money and opportunity that work ethic brings into the home?

It depends on the person and their circumstances. I’m sure there are people who find themselves in positions where they need to work long hours to support their family. Not everyone is able to land a good-paying 8-5 job

I think we currently have more of a problem in the US with young adults who never had any independence as a child. With their parents always there and always doing things for them, they are shocked when they hit the real world. Evidence on this app every day.

So I think balance is necessary, but no, I don’t agree with your premise.

Hey all, I started this bowl a couple years ago as I got into travel hacking. I going to start regular “referral posts” where everyone can share their referral links to cards, etc. if you’re going to sign up anyway, might as well give someone a referral bonus, right?! I’ll start in the comments - please post: (1) the card & bank, (2) the bonus specified by your credit card to the NEW user (not to you), (3) the link. If someone has already posted your card, just post your ref link as a reply.

Was back in the office for the first time since Covid. It’s been really nice seeing everyone again and rekindling old relationships but something about being back just feels off to me.
Covid changed a lot and it’ll be tough to go back to the old ways but it all just feels so different. Idk if I’m in culture shock or this just isn’t for me anymore. Has anyone else felt this?

Motions
I work in a midsize firm and we have the basic subscription to westlaw, which doesn’t include the ability to see filed briefs, motions, etc without incurring additional costs. I’m wondering if there is a service in the NJ/PA area that gives you access to previously filed motions and briefs? So if I’m drafting a summary judgment I could search the service and find a similar one. If this doesn’t exist.. I think I found the next million dollar idea lol
