In-House Counsel

I interviewed at a pretty big tech company starting in August. Last interview was in November. Recruiter keeps saying I’m still in the mix but they haven’t made a decision yet. Is this normal?

Totally normal. Lot of PTO in November/December at most places. If you're getting itchy, figure out what the fiscal year is for the company. If they use the calendar year, December was likely a very busy time. On the other hand, I wouldn't sit around either. You could use another offer as leverage to get some movement or on comp. If you tell your recruiter that you're actively interviewing at other places, that may light a fire.

Tech cos do usually take that long - apple, Spotify, for example, take months. If you can bag another potential opp, you could accelerate that time period to weeks if not days by telling them you have a serious offer in the making. It's a risk, but in my opinion, it's imp to nudge them over to make a decision. Even if they turn you down, it'll set you free in that you'll know where you stand. Tech cos, like law firms, have egos, if 🍎 sees Google is interested in you, ego will do the rest.

Probably normal. Good luck.

This is normal. Most company's stall hiring in Dec.

Heard back from the recruiter they said it’s going to be a few more months 😬

You should definitely keep applying and interviewing, even at the same company. An offer on something else can really only hello you. You may meet people you like and getting experience interviewing is always valuable. What stage were you at with your last interview at the company in question? On-site with multiple interviewers?

Oof, that's tough - I know because I've been there. I'd be careful of putting too much stock in what the recruiters say - their job is to keep you on the hook while the people who actually make the decisions dilly-dally and keep their options open. I had a recruiter at Twitter tell me for months across three different positions that he really wanted to get me hired (nothing against Twitter, just the way things work). Needless to say, I ended up at another great tech co, so it worked out, but just keep in mind that the recruiters are pretty minor functionaries at the end of the day. Not that you have much leverage but, if you feel like you had a decent connection with the hiring manager, you might reach out directly and try to get a sense of where they stand on things. Also, if you have any way of networking in to get a sense from the inside what's going on. Good luck! The his thing is that if you got a look from one, you'll get looks from more. If you want to be out here, just keep putting in applications. A lot of places, especially Facebook, have money to burn and lots of reqs to fill!

What do admissions officers think about “Special Projects Managers”? I was offered a job with this title, but the title seems vague to me and maybe less strategy oriented than the work I would actually be doing in the role. Is there a similar title that would be a better sell to admissions?

I literally can’t follow my own golf ball leaving my club much less someone else’s with a camera mounted on my shoulder.
