Contactor means no trajectory
I agree with that and have taken it into consideration
As others have said, make sure it’s the right fit. I’d take the salary you want, divided by hours you expect to work, then gross it up by ~30-50% to account for other benefits. Good luck!
Hard pass
I don’t think you articulated the ‘pros’
You are right. Pros would be: 1) industry role 2) only work 30 hours/week 3) full-time remote as a contractor 4) could still contract on the side if I wanted to 5) previous client of mine - great culture and already know the team 6) more time to do things outside of work
They sound super honest like they'd treat you well
How solid is the contract? I'd ask for your current salary at least. The worst they can say is no.
I would definitely ask for more, since you originally expected to be their employee, but will now have to explore options after 18 months.
Don't focus on what's realistic for them. Pick a number that would make it worth the effort and risk for you. I'd probably do 165k (your current comp) times 1.2 (you have to pay taxes, as you didn't list that as part of the benefits of being with the contractor firm)., and then times 1.5, as the additional 0.5 is a risk premium to cover 6 months job hunting if you don't get extended or hired after 12 months. And that doesn't even cover a general 20% bump which is standard for leaving firms, but maybe you can ignore this due to better wlb and good culture.
I like this - thank you. I’d be considered a w-2 employee so I shouldn’t have to pay my own taxes. I like your math too.
Don’t do it. I went from working 70 hours / week to 40-50 and make way more. Don’t drop your pay because it’s hard to build back up. You are worth what you are willing to receive in pay.
UPDATE: Thanks everyone for the input. I talked to the two approved vendors this week for the company and said $135/hour (but am flexible). They both said they could make it work but had to confirm with the coordinator if it would work for the company. I got an email this morning saying that the coordinator has to go back to talk the hiring manager….thinking the rate is probably higher than they were expecting but am hoping that we can negotiate from this point. Thanks again for the questions/input. I’d be happy to hear any other advice/feedback if you have any.
